Confused about acne cause

Hello Dr. Stoll,

I am new to this website and I must say, I've found some very interesting things bout acne. You mentioned that acne is caused by stress response and that to cure acne, you must use skilled relaxation...but in my case, I'm not really sure that is the cause. I'm currently 23 years old and I started suffering from acne I was very young, I think maybe 9 or 10 years old. It started out on my forehead and as the years went by, it convered my whole face, chest, back and upper arms. I wasn't stressed at all as a child and my mother suffered from acne so it must be hereditary no? Anyways, I've been on Accutane about 4 years ago and it worked very well for about one year but then the acne slowly came back...not as bad as before though. What should I do now? I've heard a lot of great testimonials from vitamin B5...some people use probiotics, others use EFA's...I'm currently taking a product called Femaprin which is a combination of Vitex extract with vitamin B6 to help with my menstrual irregularities...I'm hoping it will help with acne also. I really don't want to go back on Accutane and I don't want to suffer from acne for the rest of my life. I'm very isolated, very shy and social phobic because of my acne and I'm tired of living this way. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

I think it's important to note that it is *chronic* stress response that causes problems.

I heard an interview with an endocrinologist Michael Borkin and he explained how even newborn babies can be in a chronic fight-or-fly state. According to him, mothers can and do use hormones produced by fetuses for their own benefit. If a mother has been in the a state of chronic stress, and her adrenal glands can't cope with it sufficiently well, then they will put greater demand on fetus's hormonal system to get hormones they need to cope with the stress. He also said that placenta produces some hormones as well. This additional demand on fetus's endocrine system shift it into a overactive state, and the baby gets born with enlarged adrenal glands that continue to overproduce stress hormones. That exhausts them prematurely, and usual symptoms develop. Another important data point is that sex hormones can be converted to stress hormones by the body if adrenal glands don't produce enough. That leads to deficit of sex hormones. So, chronic stress can be passed from a mother to a baby hormonally, which manifests in what is sometimes perceived as genetic.

See if Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) can help you resolve your social phobia.

If Femaprin doesn't help you with your menstrual irregularities, consider maca. Actually, you may want to consider it in any case because it may help rebalance your whole endocrine system.

I have found the best thing by far, for my skin is b5. It clears it up like nothing else I have tried, well, maybe except Accutane. But that only worked whilst I was on it, and for a short time after, plus all the horrid side effects that go with it.

Have you tried b5 yet? I take 2g b5 a day. If it keeps me clear like its doing, I wont go any higher. I was originally on 3g last year. The pill can also help. I am on the pill but thats more for birth control. I am bump free whilst on b5 and I am proof that you dont need to go on really high doses of b5 no matter how severe your acne is. Some do, but I dont. I did read that its even more helpful to take zinc whilst on b5. Apparently they do a better job together.

I am also using an AHA cream. that helps to exfoliate the skin and lift off any dead skin cells. Can help with acne too as pores are less blocked. You will find it makes your skin softer and more radiant too. Dont get the high AHA %, nothing over 10% as you dont want to damage your skin or irritate it any more.

Along with SR(VERY IMPORTANT), try the b5 you may be pleasantly surprised. HY's Wife takes it and its helped her skin and at a dose of 3g.

Good luck!

Hi, Emmanuelle.

Listen to R. Depending upon the genetic propensity of the individual, very serious stress related conditions can be found in infants.

All these other things can also help a lot but most of them have the same results as your Accutane: early benefits that do not last. Combining them WITH SR is, of course, the best but the SR remains the most important single thing.

Let us know how you do.

I have been in those shoes before and I know it's hard. I had acne really bad on my forhead just like you, then it spread around on my face and chin. I really hated the ones that came up in between the nose or corner of my mouth. VERY PAINFUL sometimes.

It all started for me after high school when I was 18 and lasted until I was 24 or so. I went to the dermatologist and was put on Tetracycline and it helped. One thing I learned was to never super scrub your face. A wash cloth always made me so much worse. I'd cry my eyes out when I was alone and super scrub my face in frustration.

It started getting better after I splash washed my face with Aveno bar soap. Also like you, I was embarassed and looked away from people sometimes in college. This might sound funny, but whenever I see a girl with acne today, I flirt with her because I know that they deserve to feel pretty.

Eventually my acne went away completely in my mid twenties and hasn't surfaced again, but just know that time will do the same for you and also know that your pretty with or without it.
