Accutane and pregnancy

I hope this post isn't too long, but maybe it can help someone else avoid tragedy. My wife and I have 3 sons. 2 years ago she had a tubal after a very tough pregnancy. She is an RN who has worked in surgery for many years, including with this physician. he assured us my wife would never become pregnant again, that he had used 2 clips instead of one. He was very assertive about her not becoming pregnant again, and since we didn't plan on another child, we agreed to the procedure. 2 years later a dermatologist advised my wife to begin taking accutane. I cautioned her about some of the side effects I had heard. The dermatologist told her even his own children had taken it. So she agreed. To make a long story short, we found out this week that she is pregnant, with probably a 30% or more chance of a severely deformed child. And to make things more ridiculous, the physician who did the defective clips quit using them a long time ago due to failures, at least 5 others that we know of in our small town. Now we face some tough times. The company advises ALL women becoming pregnant to have an abortion. This makes me wonder how many thousands of women have problems with accutane not brought to light. They give statistics that only a small number of women have actually had babies with these problems (though they say the possibiblty is high if they become pregnant). An abortion means no entry into their statistics. Who knows the truth. We tend to trust anything we are told by a physician. The medical establishment is full of twisted statistics and treatments, and people like Dr. Stoll are brave to buck the trend and pay the price.

Thanks, Heartbroken.

It took a lot of courage to share this so as to help others avoid this kind of problem.

To me, the really sad thing is that, had she been given an informed choice about her acne options, she might have chosen wellness and avoided the accutane altogether.

Namaste` to you both.

Walt
