does it work?

Dr. Stoll,

What I have learned from this site so far is that you do not really promote accutane. You believe that acne can be eliminated by practicing stress reduction techinques. If this is so, why do I have acne and others don't? Do I not relax in the right way? I am intrigued by your idea. I will definitely read into it, but I plan on starting my accutane medication in a few days. The side effects of the medication are scary, but I am sick of the pain. Nothing has worked on my face, and my dermatologist promises that accutane will.
Thank You

Hi, Ruth.

There are ample testimonials on this BB about the effectiveness of SR with chronic acne (especially in adult acne which has persisted from teenage years). Go to the search engine, archives and glossary.

You will have to spend a few hours learning to understand what I REALLY have been saying since what you think I have been saying is not correct.

1. Eliminating acne with accutane (even when it works) does nothing about WHY the person has the persistant acne. Anyone who thinks that persistant acne is the only effect of those mechanisms has simply not thought deeply enough. It will not help to cut the wires to the doorbell, to avoid its ringing, when it is being rung by someone trying to warn you that your house is on fire. These concepts have been discussed in depth for years on this BB.

2. MY reasons against accutane include not only the concept above but that it is frequently prescribed with insufficient care by the doc just to save him time and increasze his income. It should be a remedy of last resort and not of first resort.

3. If you have spent much time in the archives, you know that I recommend Accutane for those who have eliminated their causes and still have some problem. I recommend it even as a first resort IF the person is committed to dealing with the causes SO that we are not just "cutting the wires to the doorbell".

If you take the time to really learn what is on this BB (search, archives, glossary) I will be happy to help you change your paradigm and solve your problem too. You owe it to yourself to spend that time since it is not fair for you to expect that I will do it all over again.

You may not like my bluntness but I give information in the best way I know for those ready to help themselves.

If you want basic research about why SR would work for acne, go to the note about genes I posted today; OR go to Hans Selye, MD's "The Stress of Life"; "Mind as Healer, Mind as Slayer" by Dr Pelletier or "The Relaxation Response" by Herbert Benson, MD (Harvard medical school professor).

THEN, when you have more questions, write again.

Walt
