LONG testimonial - on Accutane four months now

Posted by theresa on April 06, 2000 at 04:10:34:

I am a 31yr old woman who has suffered with acne since 13. I have tried 10 years of antibiotics, topicals, benzoyl peroxide products, and Retin-A. I find Clinique makeup products helpful. Admittedly, I have not tried the steps Dr. Stoll espouses, I still have to read them, I'm new to the internet and BBs, my eating habits need improvement, I stress too much, I don't relax enough (I am now making other choices). I realize I'm not addressing the source of the problem, only popping pills to placate the demons temporarily! I realize a shift in my methods is warranted. That aside, this is my experience with Accutane: I have taken 40mg BID (2x/day) for four months. My symptoms have been dry, cracked lips, dry bloodshot eyes, my cholesterol and other bloodwork including liver function has not been affected (due to better eating habits I've lowered my cholesterol from 278 to 212 while on Accutane), dry skin, some aches and pains (unknown if Accutane-related) and rash (discussed later). As for my acne, it has DISAPPEARED for 4 full months. It cleared immediately and I have had no outbreaks whatsoever. Now I see, however, all the scars that all the PICKING I did over the years caused. WORD TO THE WISE! NEVER PICK, IT MAKES IT WORSE IN THE LONG TERM! White spots, a few small lumps. The only side effect I have experienced but not heard mentioned before (except for "rash" in the side-effects list) is a blister-like rash on my arms and back of hands; slight stinging and itchiness (reminds me of poison ivy/oak reaction). Seems to be a reaction to sun exposure (i.e.: hand/arm exposure while driving). It scabs over as it heals, with a sand-paper-like roughness. It first occurred on an off-road trip in the desert. First I though I'd touched a plant and got a reaction, then I thought I was allergic to the handi-wipes and/or baby wipes I used to clean my hands and arms. I still don't know. However, it has reoccurred (not as badly, though) with sun exposure while driving. I now wear long-sleeves. It's not pleasant and unsightly, but bearable. Only started in 3rd month of treatment. NOT A PIMPLE, NOT A BLACK OR WHITEHEAD, NOT A CYST HAS REARED ITS UGLY HEAD FOR FOUR MONTHS!! Nothing to pick! I've almost forgotten what its like to have a bad complexion, except for the scars. Minimal makeup is needed. I use an SPF15 moisturizer. My self-esteem and confidence in my appearance has improved dramatically. No depression (although a previously prescribed prescription of Paxil 10mg/day may be helping me). Anyway, aside from chapped lips, dry eyes and rash, my experience with Accutane has been 100% positive. I have read all the BB postings on Accutane. I hope I don't experience hair loss or other heretofore unexperienced side-effects upon cessation of treatment. I can't say at this time whether I would go through another treatment period. Perhaps I need to explore more natural approaches to KEEP my skin clear, post-Accutane. I am open to learning how. Popping pills is not the answer. Like with drugs and alcohol, your problems await you when the effects wear off. My best friend has had 12 years without acne since she took Accutane at age 30. She is now 42 and only occasionally has a blemish or two. Totally positive experience for her. He son(15) has achieved positive results. I never thought I'd walk into a room without worrying about how my face looked. I hope this testimonial helps someone out there. I have one month to go and am hoping for the best... Keep learning and growing! Be open to other more natural God-given ways of healing... Theresa

PS: Dr. Stoll - I suspect the sarcastic tone and attitude you project in your answers turns more people off instead of encouraging them to read on...
