Acne and diet

Hi, I had a question for Dr. Stoll(or anyone else who might know) concerning acne and diet. I've started doing SR and exercising regularly, but a whole foods diet is a little bit extreme for me I think. Anyway, what my question is, what is worse in regarsd to acne...processed sugars or high-fat foods? Also, is eating natural sugar(like in fruit) bad?

Thank you.

I think it varies with the individual (as far as foods affecting acne). If you could just eliminate your major sugars and all bad oils (hydrogenated, etc.) and substitute olive oil as well as ditch the margarine and use real butter (sparingly), that would be a great way to start. Then later after you've adjusted to those changes, you will probably feel ready to move into an even better diet.

From what I've read, processed sugar is worse for acne because it disrupts hormonal balance, which is probably the main cause of acne. Natural sugar (like in fruits) can do the same but to a lesser degree. Have you heard of glycemic index? Unless you have severe digestive problems and/or glucose intolerence, you should be able to eat several fruits and sweet vegetables a day with no problems.

Hi, Shy.

The sugar is more damaging than the fat ESPECIALLY if you are taking the essential fatty acids to help your body metabolize the fats more efficiently. Be sure you know that REFINED CARBOHYDRATES ARE THE SAME AS SUGAR when it comes to this.

Whole fruits are only bad if you have candida complicating the condition. See the homepage about refined carbohydrates or, better yet, get Beth Loiselle, RD's book.

Let us know how you do.

Walt
