This really bothers me.

Posted by Cool Devices on January 29, 2001 at 01:33:02:

Dr. Stoll, when I first began reading your approaches to medicine, I was willing to believe that there was at least some truth to what you were preaching. However, it seems like the more I read, the more I realize just how ignorant YOU are about some things. I really think you should take your own advice and read up first before saying something.

I've heard you claim that so-called subliminal messages are more powerful than the government lets on. Give me a break. You are aware that James Vicary, the so called founder of subliminal messages, admitted to falsifying his data, and that the entire concept of subliminal messages was always a hoax, right? I can't believe you, as a doctor, were not aware of this. If you don't believe me, or think I don't know the whole story, then look it up.

Canola Oil being toxic? Ummm. Be serious. Just because the rape plant is from the mustard family of plants means nothing. By the way, turnip, cabbage, watercress, horseradish, and radish are also from this same family of plants. I can't believe you would even let on to this. Besides, since you seem so adamant about EFAs...you'd think you'd support canola oil.

The healing power of magnets? uh....

Anyway, I don't really feel like typing anymore. I'm really starting to see just why your license was revoked. I'm just glad I'm not as gullible/hypochondriatic as some of your followers.

If you are so bothered, why do you spend your time at this site? It never hurts to get opinions from either medical professionals or others who may have had the same problems. You have to take everything with a grain of salt, no matter who the advise comes from. Sometimes, if you are lucky, you will find a remedy. What you do with the information is up to the individual, whether it is beneficial information or not. No one is responsible but the person that takes the advise. I personally enjoy this site. Even though it is an open forum, I don't believe it is necessary to belittle or intentionally say hurtful things to people that are trying to lend a helping hand to others. I would almost lay odds that you have a profound problem in your social abilities with others. I wish you the best.

Dr Stoll has made some very good points, I just get eary that most of the illnesses in here are due to bracing like he says. Or they have GERD. It seems like easy answers to me. This I dont understand.

Hello.
First, I agree with you that some of what Dr. Stoll says is somewhat "out there" (I too wanted to see scientific evidence of magnets and their affect on health. and still do). But just because I don't understand how something works does NOT, therefore, make it invalid.

But you miss Dr. Stoll's main theme, which has been PROVEN, and that is of the healing power of the brain. If you are sincerely interested, I challenge you to read the book Dr. Stoll references on this site, "Mind as Healer, Mind as Slayer", by Dr. Pelletier (spl??). I found it a difficult read but it exhaustively proves the theme in question.

It turns out that many of the illness' for which the main-stream medical establishment has no answer can be cured by the body itself. Dr. Stoll, et al have shown that when the brain daily reaches the relaxation response (for lack of a better term) that the body's healing mechanism is greatly improved. Enough so as to "cure" chronic conditions for which conventional medicine had not clue.

I'm not sure why I'm telling you all this. You can look it up. (I've spent years doing so, so maybe my brief summary will interest you to look deeper into "complementary medicine".) I feel that you were very quick to judge Dr. Stoll's intelligence when you don't really understand where he is coming from.
(I too don't agree with everything I read on this site, but so what?)

Well, thank you for you mock sympathy, I always appreciate being patronized. I'll tell you why I'm here even if it bothers me. I found this site by searching for information on a certain problem(and no it's not a social one), and when I saw what Dr. Stoll had to say, it intrigued me. I began to believe what he was saying, and I even began to research different forms of skilled relaxation. To make a long story short, I feel like this site wasted a lot of my time by even interesting me in the first place.

If you think that "bracing" is an easy answer - I do say I think you're mistaken.

C D,

It is good to investigate Anything that sounds like it
might be a cure for a problem and if you don't believe or
accept things then there is no problem and just move on and
take what was learned either here or from investigation and
use it to your benefit.

Jeeze, why are you guys making this into a personal thing? I didn't "insult all of us." I'm sorry if my post offended any of you people, because I honestly did not mean it in such a way. The only person I am attacking is Dr. Stoll. I think this Dr. has been blown way out of proportion. This forum is almost like a cult. You know, he CAN be wrong, and getting a second opinion is a very good idea about anything Dr. Stoll(and the sources he points torwards) advocates. It's just far too easy to latch onto some ideas when you're desparate for help, and I think Dr. Stoll needs to be much more careful about what he says.
Anyway, as a few people have suggested, I won't be posting here anymore. I'm not trying to take away your right to practice Dr. Stoll's methods or anything like that, and I don't understand the overwhelming "THEN JUST LEAVE" response I got. As crazy as it sounds, it very much reminds me of a cult.

C.D.

Yes, you did insult us as well as Dr Stoll.

"I'm just glad I'm not as gullible/hypochondriatic as some of your followers."

If you were to stay around for a while and read through the archives, you would read where he advocates second and third opinions.

Perhaps, you decided he ws incorrect and just jumped to an incorrect judgement call. I would welcome you stay around, read through the archives and give it a chance, however, I seriously doubt you will. I've spoken with my doctors on some of these subjects and they're in complete agreement. The last doctor advised that tension is the same as "bracing" and was very pleased with my SR techtiques.

In my opinion (and this is just my opinion so please everyone dont jump on my ass) the SR is the most flawed part of Dr.Stolls approach. Not that SR is bad in and of itself. It just seems that if you have so many stressors (psychological and otherwise) in your life that the stress is begining to effect your health - SR may help in the short run but wouldnt working on getting rid of the major stressors in your life be more helpful. Seems like Daily SR is kind of a short term band aid. I found myself being MORE stressed out and anxous just trying to make time to do the SR twice a day! I know others have had great results from daily SR but I didnt find it as helpful as other advice on this site. (again - JUST my opinion)

PS: acne sucks - I feel for you

Hi, Acneface.

Just how, EXACTLY, did you do "Dr Stoll's approach"??? MY bet would be that you did as many short cuts as you thought you could get away with and when your flawed progrem did not work "threw out the baby with the bathwater".

"Mind as Healer, Mind as Slayer" has the information you need if you are willing to take the time to learn something new instead of "still looking".

Here's a link I found describing the myth of subliminal messages. It's a very short read and it provides source for further information. The whole history of the urban legend of subliminal messages is VERY cut and dry. IT's not open for debate. This is only one of the thousand websites dealing with this subject.

I really don;t appreciate you assuming that I did all of the shortcuts. The only thing I can't do is the whole foods diet--I eat a healthy diet, but it would stress me out way too much to worry about eating the exact things I need to. I do SR 2x a day and I take EFA's every day. I gave your approach a try for about 8 months and my skin looks terrible. I would apprecite if you could offer me support and advice about why it is not working and what, possibly, I am doing wrong. It seems that you are doing exactly what you criticize other doctors for doing--not caring. To understnad your approach does take a lot of time to understand and I have devoted alot of time and energy to wellness and i think it is wrong for you to dismiis that.
