skin and accutane

Posted by inquisitive on February 11, 2001 at 14:28:30:

Dr. Stoll,
I know that you r against taking accutane and that it should only be taken for severe cystic acne, and I was wondering if this means that accutane gets rid of existing sebacious and acne cysts in people with this type of acne by drying up the oil glands, therefore preventing new ones as well.......A response would be appreciated.

Hi, Inquisitive.

I am NOT against taking accutane! I AM against it being used as most conventional physicians use it-->first thing suggested. Once the things that actually deal with the common causes have been done, and there is STILL significant acne present (rare) accutane might be the best option so long as the person KNOWS the risks.

dr. stoll,
i am sorry if i sounded like i was accusing u of being against accutane....i meant no harm by it....i am aware of it's side effects as well....However, you still haven't answered my question....Since accutane is inteded for SEVERE cystic acne, does this mean that due to the fact that it dries up the sebacious glands, existing sebacious and acne cysts go away, and new ones are prevented? Please respond...Thank you;-)

Hi, inquisitive.

MY complaint about accutane is how the so called "experts" are using it. Since they are the experts, your questions are much more appropriately answered by them. After all they are the ones making money by prescribing it.

Hope this helps.

Walt
