Long-term Effects: Accutane

Posted by AM on February 13, 2001 at 11:50:21:

Dr. Stoll: I've been browsing the archives re: acne and accutane after my MD recently recommended Accutane. The acne archives have been helpful to a certain extent in learning more about the drug and its effects, but I haven't really read a definitive answer to the question of long-term effects. A couple women have posted concerns/experiences regarding the long-term, post-Accutane effects on pregnancy (1+ years after treatment), but the published studies and professional expertise I've sought has been vague on this point. Is there such a lack of knowledge or treatment history in this area, or have there really been no post-treatment reproductive difficulties to speak of?

Hi AM, the truth is that Accutane is a new enough drug that nobody really knows what the long term effects will be. Whoever has been taking it so far, they are the guinea pigs. Do you want to be another guinea pig? Already there are more and more serious problems being linked to Accutane, and I fear this is only the beginning.

I was on Accutane about 8 years ago (back when I was a teen). I never had any probs with it. Other than reddened/itchy face, all else seemed fine. And that goes for the current moment too. I don't know of any long term effects either. I was on it for a few months, at least.

Hi, AM.

Listen to truth (Thanks, Truth!) I am concerned that response is closest to the "truth" and like so many drugs, we will find out later. Then there will be suits and countersuits, etc.

For such a condition, that is usually self limited & not life threatening, to use a powerful drug, that we know so little about, seems to me to be pretty risky. For those whose acne lasts beyond puberty--and who have tried all the wellness things for a year without results--accutane is a rational alternative once the patient knows as much as is known at the time about the drug.

Walt
