B-5 protocol for acne

Posted by DCrilley on March 15, 2001 at 06:49:56:

Just wondering what protocols people are following when taking the B-5 for acne. Just trying to get an idea if the B-5 should be taken with food, how many times a day (and when), take with water or juice, etc. Also interested in the dosage - what seems to work for most people. Also what brands are being used and how effective.

Any other info would be appreciated, as my son is about to start this process.

Here's what is working for me: I use VitaminShoppe brand B5 (pantothenic acid), which I ordered on-line from their own website, www.vitaminshoppe.com. I purchased the 500mg capsules, in the quantity 300 per bottle. I take 5 each morning WITH FOOD and 5 each evening WITH FOOD. (The label says "preferably with a meal".) This comes to 5 grams per day, half the amount used in the study. This works for me, your son may need a higher dose. I drink a full glass of water each time. I tried 10 grams per day the first few days, but had burning diarrhea. Your son may or may not have the same problem. I noticed results very quickly, in less than a week. When I backed the dose off too far, I got some new acne cysts but when I upped the dose again I stopped breaking out. You may have to experiment a little, but I feel the best thing is to find the lowest effective dose and go with that. Good luck!

kmd,

i just started the B5 a few days ago and have noticed a decrease in the oil on my face - this is incredible!

i have found (over the years) that the small whitehead pimples are easy to control with benzoyl peroxide cream. but, the cysts - they are such a problem (painful and like mosquito bites (size and shape)).

do you think the B5 will work for the cysts? i'm hoping and waiting to see.

also, do you use anything else? any topicals?

thank you,
de

Hi de, isn't it exciting?!

I am using Proactiv, which I started using 2 months ago before discovering the B5. What I noticed with Proactiv, was a decrease in the number of whiteheads, but NOT a decrease in the cysts. However, I only use the Proactive wash in the morning (and not the lotion), and I wash with Dove soap in the evenings and use the Proactiv lotion then. So I don't use all products twice a day. I don't use the Proactiv toner liquid at all, because I developed an allergy to it.

Now with B5, I get probably 90% fewer cysts! Of course, this is the most exciting thing because the cysts are the ones that HURT and cause scarring. I think if I become more reliable in taking my doses every day, never missing, I could get to the point where my cysts are 99% gone. I even went through PMS and only got one new cyst this month...

Thanks, kmd.

Up to now, I have been a skeptic but you have finally convinced me. Even though this may not work for everyone, it certainly could be a first line of action while one institutes a wellness program to prevent recurrance.

I still am suspicions that the benefits will be temporary since I can hardly believe that acne is a pantothenic acid deficiency--even though I stand ready to learn.

Even if it IS, it would help explain why wellness would help: ALL chronic conditions are of multiple and interlocking causation. As one improves the general health of the marvelous system that is our bodymind, everything works better and just uses different pathways to get the same result. Therefore, IF acne is a B5 deficiency, the wellness would still allow the body to heal itself around that deficiency.

Certainly, in that scenario, B5 would help acne and the other problems of an unhealthy lifestyle would progress unabated.

I am really interested in how you are doing in a year or so.

Namaste`

Walt
