hormone levels/birth control/acne

Posted by Shannon on March 18, 2001 at 14:01:49:

Have any females gotten their hormone levels tested and then taken a birth control pill to help balance their hormones thus clearing their ane?

shannon,

i understand your frustration. i have struggled (off and on) with acne since i was 15 (now 28). i was on antibiotics for years (off and on). my latest dermatologist said that absolutely acne is caused by hormones. he suggested the pill, but i can't take that. he then put me on spironolactone (anti-androgen). it worked great, even eliminated cramps. however, i was also taking my basal body temp daily to monitor my cycle and noticed that something was wrong. my cycle became a wreck, bleeding when i shouldn't have been and my temps weren't in the expected ranges. i was concerned about my hormones, so i first decreased my dose, then finally stopped taking it. i'm not suggesting that you take this. i'm just sharing with you my experience that clearly indicates acne is related to hormones.

so, what am i doing now? currently, i am on a whole foods diet, and taking dr. stoll's recommended supplements in his book. (i have not started SR, yet, but i use stress reduction techniques as i need them (on a daily basis, just not dedicated times)- this has significally reduced the stress in my life and tension in my body.) back to the supplements, i have noticed that the EFAs have improved the texture of my skin and are clearing up some patches of excema. also, i swear they are reducing fine lines too.

also, i have started B5, 3-4grams/day. i have noticed a clear reduction in the oil on my face. i use a good benzoyl peroxide and klaron (Rx). also use Pernox scrub - which really decreases the size of my pores (not a Rx, but have to request the pharmacist to order it.)

another note on the spironolactone - i think this also comes in a creme. possibly this is an option. finally, i have not looked into this, but i think saw palmetto is also an anti-androgen. again, this is something that would need to be thoroughly researched.

i hope you can find an alternative to accutane. i watched my husband go through that treatment - i don't want to get into the details, but it was not pleasant and both of us were worried about the effects on his liver.

my only advice, please consider all of your options. which makes we wonder, have you considered taking vitamin A itself instead of accutane?

kind regards,
de

Hi, Shannon.

This reminds me: How does your "dermatologist" explain that one of the most effective conventional treatments for acne is certain birth control pills??? Perhaps he doesn't know that they are hormones?

I hope you get a copy of your records from this doc. They will make humorous reading in the future. I will even bet that he didn't put IN his records what he said to you since even he must know that it is ludricous.

Walt

I HAVE READ YOUR PREVIOUS POSTING AS WELL.
GETTING YOUR HORMONE LEVEL CHECKED IS NOT NECESSARILY THE ANSWER. ( I WANTED TO HAVE IT CHECKED ,TOO.) YOUR HORMONE LEVEL MIGHT BE AT A NORMAL LEVEL, BUT YOUR BODY REACTS TO IT DIFFERENTLY.( MY DERMATOLOGIST TOLD ME THIS WHEN I WANTED ONE.)I WENT ON THE NET TO RESEARCH IT A LITTLE BIT.
THIS IS WHAT I FOUND: THERE ARE LOTS OF NEW MATERIALS (MAINLY PLASTICS,AND CERTAIN OTHER CHEMICALS LIKE AMALGAN-TOOTH FILLING, POLLUTION IN THE AIR , MICROWAIVED FOOD-ETC.), THAT ACT IN YOUR BODY AS ENZYMES. THE BODY CANNOT MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND TRIGERS SOMETHING TO BE ACTED OUT AS IF THE REAL ENZYME WAS PRESENT.
BACK TO THE BIRTH CONTROL PILL TREATMENT. I AM GOING TO START ON ONE ADDRESSING THIS ISSUE .(MAINLY SUPPRESSING MALE HORMONES WITH NO OBVIOUS SIDE EFFECTS-BIGGER BOOBS,REGULATED, AND SHORTER PERIODS) MY DERMATOLOGIST TOLD ME ABOUT THIS PILL ( HE HEARD ABOUT IT ON A CONFERENCE).IT IS CALLED DIANE. I USED TO BE ON IT BACK HOME. IT IS ONLY SOLD IN EUROPE (GERMANY : "SCHERING AG")-IF YOU WANT TO CONTACT THEM
ANTI-MEN HORMONES(THESE TYPE OF BIRTH CONTROL PILLS) ARE FOR THE ACNE AROUND YOUR LOWER JAW.
I WAS ALSO TOLD TO TAKE B-6 AROUND MY PERIOD FOR FLAIR UPS.
I HOPE I HELPED.
