Dr. Stoll-another ques. Acne (stress-effect)/What is the hypothalamus?

Posted by Amy on May 01, 2001 at 13:02:51:

Dear Dr. Stoll,
Recently, you were so kind to respond to a post of mine re:
acne & alcohol. You stated that my acne was due to "hormonal
changes due to storage of chronic stress-effect in the
hypothalamus." Could you tell me exactly what that is & how
it works. Also, do you know anything about Bowen
(NST-Nuerostructural therapy)? I'm wondering if it could
help with my acne. After your response, I began to think my
acne is omething I've been holding on to...I grew up in a
family that was very critical, judgemental and with a lot of
pressure to be and look perfect. My acne + scars have kept
me from being "perfect" thus greatly influencing my lack of
self-esteem. As a result, I never felt "good enough." My
theory is this, if NST therapy gives signals to the body to
reset (balance) itsef, could this help to "decode" the
chronic stress-effect (and cell memory) and help balance my
hypothalamus? I hope this makes sense. Thank you so, so
m

hi

check out the terms you are unfamialir with in our glossary/archives. this will give you the answers to your questions about the usualt topics of discussion here.

any therapy could potentially help you reduce the levels of new stress that you face (maybe help stop you from feeling bad from now on) but the only thing that will get to the root of the problem and DIScharge the stress that is already stored in the hypo. and affecting your entire body/mind is skilled relaxation. again, see our archives and glossary.

i think also if you do a search at this aite for BOWEN NST you will find that we have information about these things too.

educate yourself on these cocepts and digest it all...then ask dr stoll questions not already covered in the past in our glossary/archives. (this is what Dr Stoll will urge you to do. you will like what you learn.)

Here is a direct quote from Walt to me regarding the hypothalamus and stress-effect: "Outside stimulae are collected and interpreted by the cortex (our thinking part of the brain). That is directly connected to the hypothalamus, which is the part of our brain that produces “feelings” in our bodies either directly (limbic system, etc.) or indirectly via the hormonal effects mediated through the pituitary. The undischarged stress-effect gets stored in the hypothalamus which is what Selye called the G.A.S. which eventually, profoundly changes all of the messages that pass through to the bodymind."

Thanks. I feel as though I've learned so much already...I
will study the archives some more. I have tried various
forms of SR (namely yoga & meditation), but my acne
persists. I try to cancel my negative thought patterns
constantly, but when I look in the mirror each day, it's
hard to be positive. One wise women told me I concentrate
too much on the outside (my skin), that I should concentrate
more on the inside (my soul)

SR can take 6-12 months to cure your acne. In the meantime, have you looked into high dose B5?

You might be confusing mg with grams? 550mg of B5 isn't going to be a high enough dose to do anything for acne! If you really want to see if it will work for you try taking at least 2500mg twice a day, for a total of 5000mg - that's 5 grams. The people in the study used twice that amount.

You can get capsules that are 500mg each, so you can take 5 in the morning and 5 in the evening. If you want to try the full 10 grams, then you'd need to take 5, 4 times per day. I had diarrhea when I tried that high of a dose.

i know what u mean about trying so hard to be positive when looking in the mirror...it just seems irrational doesnt it ?

that whole inside/outside thing is nice, but it just seems to trite too. i think thats little to simplistic myself.

yoga and meditation are great, but it is hard to do them enough to get the benefits anytime soon.

we have SO much stress stored inside by the time problems like acne come out that you need to do LOTS of skiled relaxation for even four or five or six months...this is why we use the simpleset methids of 20 minutes twice perday...it would be too hard to do yoga like that...you could also do 20 minutes of SR three times per day ...or just add another session when you have time here and there (but not less than twice anyday)...

Have you had experience with practicing SR? What type of SR
did you practice? If so, when did you begin to see the
results?

hi

i found this site and learned about some of the specifics of SR about a year ago maybe. (i had a few positive experiences with meditation years ago.) when i found this site, SR was like a life saver for me. i wasnt getting any sleep at all and when i did it was terribly TIRING when i woke up. SR allowed me primarily to be well rested despite no sleep. i was thrilled. i felt those results right away.

sometimes i just kind of "mentally squeeze" muscles for just a second and release them, starting at the head and moving section by section around the body. i begin with this to relax the whole body...then i try to focus on breathing and this leads usually me into a sort of released-control mode.

other times i listen to the CD for theta brain waves.

frankly, neither has been effective lately. i jusyt have too much tension in my body. its hard bc i have chemcial sensitivty problems and i have been rolfed but i have toruble getting away from enough of the triggers to keep the tension out of my body...we keep trying though...but we have to bbe careful, bc we have realized that our efforts to keep trying lead us into a mode of simply distracting ourselves from our need to get better under the guise of learning about technical aspects health and wellness.

so we think about those much worse off...none of us actually knows real hell. none of us have lived through (or died in ) gas chambers at Treblinka... or the horrid like...none of us is in a society where the opportunity to learn information to get better is not even possible...none of us is so benighted that we have not even ONE luxury or spoil of personal reward. NONE

On May 1st I made a post re: my frustration with my acne
problem. In your response on May 2nd you suggested I
increase my dosage of B5 from 550 mg to 5 grams which I
tried immediately. Well, I want you to know that 10 days
later, my skin has responded beautifully!!! It's not
perfect, but I've noticed a dramatic improvement - even in
the texture of my skin. It seems smoother. I'm still
finding it hard to believe!! I still suffer from the
scarring, but at least my cysts have disappeared. Thank you
Thank you so so much!

I have another question...I've noticed I'm more bloated
these days... LGS possibly??? I read in the BB recently
that "Candida uses the B vitamins in its metabolism." Could
this be why I f
