Dr. Stoll I am a 33 year old black female who has had an interesting medial history. (As follows)
Age 7 Hernia
Age 15 Right Breast Lumpectomy - Benign
Age 19 Right Breast Lumpectomy - Benign
Age 20 Noticed small spot of hair loss in crown of head. Thought it was due to chemical services.
Age 28 Fibroid removal
Age 32 vaginal hemorrhage let to D & C and blood transfusion. Took Lupron Depot Suspension
for two months control bleeding and shrink fibriods.
Age 32 Further investigation led to the discovery of a Progressive Renal Carcinoma and 4 cyst on right ovary -
Right Kidney (no chemotherapy or radiation taken I was informed that it is not successful on Kidney cancers - surgery was the only option)--neprectomy and cystectomy)
Age 34 Over the years my hair loss has progressed. After seeing several dermatologists, one suggested that it may be caused by one of two diseases. The first disease being lupus the second, Lichen Planopilaris. A scalp biopsy confirmed the latter. The only treatment option given to me was to take the drug Accutane for six months.
Because of my medical history (Cancer, cysts & Fibroids) and the fact that I have been trying to conceive I am afraid to take this drug. If I take Accutane my doctor wants to put me on two forms of birth control. I've never taken birth control pills and have never been pregnant.
After trying to become pregnant for six months, my new GYN suggested I take Lupron for 6 months to continue the therapy my Old GYN started and to shrink the new fibroids and endometreosis. This was after we tried to conceive for 6 months.
My last shot of Lupron was October 15th 1998 Because I havent become pregnant yet and can not stand to lose more hair I have decided to treat the Lichen Planopilaris instead of trying to become pregnant.
My questions are as follows:
Do you know what causes Lichen Planopilaris?
Do you know of any treatment options for those diagnoses with Lichen Planopilaris, other than Accutane?
Are you aware of any studies that have been made as to the number of deformed children born to women who have taken Accutane?. ( I know that I will have to wait 2 months after therapy to become pregnant) I am still concerned.
Do you know if hair transplants can be preformed on black hair ( I currently perm my hair every 6-8 weeks with calcium hydroxide products? I can no longer cover the large bald spot.
Can the the accutane damage the one kindney I have left?
Has cancer studies been preformed on Accutane? What are the results?
Do you know what could have caused kidney cancer at my young age?
Can you recommend the best diet and supplements a person with my medical history. (my pressure fluctuates between 122/85 and 140 or 95)
I weighted only 2lbs 6 ozs when I was born in 1965. My mon thinks there might be a connection because of the drugs given to her to hold the pregnancy during the 1960's. What do you think?
Any assistance you can give me will be grately appreciated

If I had your history I would be TERRIFIED to take accutane.
First of all, the answer to ALL of your questions I think is the same thing.
You need to go to the library or the bookstore (Amazon.com also has) and get a copy of "Every Woman's Book" by Paavo Airola, ND. You will want your own copy eventually for reference & daily resource.
Once you have that under your belt, if you still have questions, write again. THEN, as you get healthier than you have ever been, please share your experiences with the bb participants so others can see that they are not dependent on continuing to treat the tips of the iceberg---
it IS possible to deal with the iceberg directly.
