Dr Stoll-what do you think of this acne treatment?

Posted by Ann on July 24, 2001 at 07:09:59:

Dr Stoll,

I've heard that in some countries they use this as an acne CURE.

A 6 week and 3 days course of topical 30% sulphur cream and zinc cream applied to face in a thin layer (twice a day). You must not use any moisturiser of appear anywhere close to the sun (due to a risk of permanent pigmentation) during treatment and for a couple of months after.

They start off with a lower percentage of sulphur cream mixed with zinc cream gradually increasing it just sulphur cream (30%) for the last three days.

It burns your skin off to a scab together with the bacteria in it. (it actually looks scary).

What are the possible implications/ side effects of this treatment? I know it must be done under supervision of a doctor because of a risk of bad scarring.

Do you believe it can cure acne in some people?

Hi, Ann.

I would be very interested in anyone's experience (good or bad) who have tried this.

I cannnot imagine it being anything but a temporary effect.

Walt

Are the any cases where acne is caused by some sort of bacteria overgrowth that happens because your immune system is down? In which case this treatment might work permanently?

Are hormones always related to acne?

I have a slightly increased androstenedione levels in my blood. I've always had a bit of facial hair since i was a teenager but it increased over the last couple of years and recently i developed bad acne vulgaris.

Would your 3-legged wellness stool program still be able to get rid of the problem?

Why do I have increased androgens?

Do the hypothalmic hormones affect androgen production ?
