Pimples - too young?

Posted by One who's been through that on September 13, 2001 at 13:25:34:

I've noticed that my 9 year old daughter is beginning to get a few pimples. She started getting tiny ones on the nose, and now two adult sized ones on the chin, and slow healing. Normally I wouldn't think anything of it, but no one else her age has them and from reading this bulletin board I have learned that it's best to nip all problems in the bud before they get worse. Isn't it unusual to get zits at this age? I've read about acne in the archives, but need to know if there is anything special I should do. For the record, she never gets sick, eats well and is very healthy and happy. Will she run into a problem with this later? What should I do, if anything?

Hi, One.

Statistically, puberty is happening earlier and earlier in life. The theory is that this is due to the environment.

The same things that the archives talks about will help; you just have to start doing it earlier.

I agree that puberty is happening sooner and a lot of girls her age are showing the signs. But my daughter is not going through puberty at all (and her 12 year old sister is only just beginning to show breast development - so I don't think her younger sister will be so early). Is there another reason she's beginning to get these pimples, and what is the best thing to do for her to stop this incipient problem? Is there a product you recommend?

When one of my sons was 9 I took him in to have several moles that had been appearing looked at, and was told he was in puberty (I had no idea). He explained something about the patterns of the moles running along nerve lines, but that it correlated to puberty (can't remember exactly how though). Again at age 10, my son's pediatrician told me he is in puberty. I would never have known by looking at him (no voice changes, nothing else really).

The point is your daughter's getting pimples is a sign that her hormones are starting to change (puberty) because before that point kids don't even HAVE sebaceous glands. If she is getting pimples, she must be starting puberty (as far as the logic of my understanding goes, anyway).

Have you read the acne archives? Tons of great info there! Keep in touch with questions after you read the info (it's a lot, probably can't do it in one sitting).

Take care everyone.

Thank you very much for the info, kmd.
I always thought that the hormones changed suddenly when the periods start, which was when I thought puberty was. But is sounds like it's a very gradual process - is that right? Does this mean that her growth will be affected since it's starting so soon?

I've mentioned that I have a 9-year-old who is beginning to get pimples on her nose and chin. We wonder if she's entering puberty even though there are no body changes at all yet in this skinny girl. I've read the acne archives and there is a lot of information about accutane (which I would never consider) some info about Pantothenic acid and I've read about dysautonomia being the main cause of acne for people past puberty and the importance of not eating fatty foods. But I haven't yet found any information about what to do about a kid who IS entering puberty and has it. Pimples seem "normal" at puberty (though I have yet to meet another 9-year-old with them) but is there anything I can do to get rid of them or to make sure they don't develop into bad acne? I may be wrong but getting pimples this young seems to be a bad indication for the future. Please tell me what to do for this problem, which just began about a month or so ago. BTW, she's not under stress, eats good food (not fatty or sugary) and is very healthy and happy. Do you suggest a different kind of face soap? A face mask? Certain vitamins? Specific suggestions would be most welcome.

Hi, Thanks for posting, I've just learned that my dysautonomia has been the cause of my acne for all these years!

Here's what works for me:
1) General -- I know that you said her diet is good but you want to watch the carbohydrate/sugar (all types, including fructose also from grains) intake. Avoid fried foods, eat lots of green, leafy veggies.
2) Have her drink lots of pure water.
3) Vitamin B6 (supplement or in diet [bananas, etc.], although many on this board report that vitamin B5 works best (I've never taken B5).
4) Soap -- Fostex plain (in brown box). Only costs $5-6 per bar, and a bar will last a long time provided it doesn't sit in a puddle of water. She can bathe with it as well as wash her face. Not to be confused with the benzoyl peroxide formula (green box), this one may have to be ordered for you by a pharmacist but it is WELL worth it.
5) Face wash -- Thursday Plantation Daily Acne Face Wash. This is a liquid gel containing both salicylic acid (active ingredient in Fostex soap) and tea tree oil. This is great stuff! Again, she can bathe with it if necessary (if she should break out on her shoulders, chest, etc.). (Available at health food stores -- Wild Oats has it but I found it much cheaper at local (small) vitamin shop.)
6) St. Ives Apricot Scrub. This will "slough" off dead skin cells and make skin feel smoother in addition to helping clear blackheads and pimples. (Available at Wal-Mart, drug stores, etc.)

I would also suggest that hair be kept off of her face, as increased oiliness of scalp usually goes along with it. Also try to discourage her from "picking" at them. Everyone is different, of course, but I have found benzoyl peroxide-containing products to be very harsh and irritating and therefore best avoided.

Periodically throughout the day it is a good idea to have her use a Stridex pad-like product to quickly remove excess oil ("shininess") when she is is not able to wash her face. (This will make her feel better, too -- having oily skin is not comfortable.)

I hope this is of help. Good luck, and take care.

That was a lot of wonderful information, Joan! Thank you very much for sharing all of it with me, I'm keeping a printout so that I won't forget anything. I will follow all the great practical advice starting today - going to the store to buy the soap & Stridex you recommended right away, and I'll look for that face wash at a health food store. I appreciate all your help.

Please keep us posted on her progress --
