Dear Dr. Stoll,
I am on my third week of taking acutane to get rid of my acne. Can you please tell me if it is safe for me to have micro dermabration done on my skin (to get rid of acne scars) while I am on acutane? And why please. Thank you.

Peggy.
Since the answer to this question is highly individual, only the prescribing doc can answer it. Have you asked him?

Dear Peggy,
I spent alot of money having micro-dermabrasion done to get rid of some acne scarring and it didn't do a thing!! Don't get sucked into believing that it will get rid of your scars. It DOES NOT work for scars. The only thing it did do was make my pores appear smaller, but this is only temporary.

Yes, I asked him. My dermatologist said getting micro dermabrasion while on accutane would be fine. But the people at the place that performs the micro dermabrasion said they would not do it while I was on accutane. This is what has confused me. What should I do?

I would run, not walk from that dermatologist. How irresponsible to advise you to have any invasive procedure done whilst on Accutane. Your skin is extremely sensitive whilest on this drug and healing is impaired.
Please dont consider doing anything, even something as seemingly harmless as waxing on your skin while you are on this drug. I waited till after completing Accutane to begin waxing again.Better to be safe than sorry. Wait at least a year or so after finishing this drug to even think about doing anything like micro-dermabrasion. Thats what most competent dermatologists would tell you. Remember its your skin, not theirs. Do your own homework and dont rely on everything they tell you to be gospel.
