Possible Arthritis or something else?

I did read through the achives but I haven't found my specific problem. My mother has Rhuematoid Arthritis and a very bad case of Hammer Toe. I've noticed recently that my toes, 2nd and 3rd have started to turn inward toward my big toe. The nails of these toes are resting against their neighbor toes and it's a little uncomfortable. A few of my fingers are doing the same. Also, on the inside of my thumbs on both hands, there is a bone (or something) starting to protrude above the joint. You can see clearly when I hold my thumb up and calluses are forming on them. Are any of these signs of arthritis or is this some other problem?

Hi, Janine.

Chronic bracing (one of the main things that precedes arthritis) causes this.

See the archives for bracing remedies. If this were me, I would start by educating myself with Roger Golten's "The Owner's Guide to the Body". Your library can find you a copy. Rosie Spiegel's "Bodies, Health & Consciousness" (see Rolfing archives) would also help.

Let us know what you learn.

Walt

Thanks so much Dr. Stoll. After reading the archives, I believe I'm understanding. It's funny because my husband is always telling me to relax. I have many bad nervous habits, one of which is constantly twirling my hair through my fingers. I also suffer from Restless Leg Syndrome almost every night. I had kind of a hard childhood and have trouble relaxing, I have panic attacks when someone knocks on my door even! I have numb spots on my back and the tops of my big toes. So it's all sort of related if I understand bracing. I noticed at night, and even when I'm typing this, my jaw is clenched and so are my shoulders. I'll look into the books you've recommended. I was diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel, and I have a small cyst in my wrist. I never went back for treatment cause I was afraid of getting an EMG. :) Basically I'm a coward. Thanks agian, I'll keep everyone informed of what else I find.
