long term ibuprofen use?

Hi all

I have had knee pains off and on for a long time, arthritis runs in my family. not sure what I have. I am going to see a rheumatologist soon, she put me in for September (long wait!) anyway, it occurred to me I have been taking ibuprofen for a long time, in an effort to help the swelling. as in, I bet I've taken two tablets each morning for well over a year. I take it without even thinking half the time, anymore.

what are the long term effects? am I going to ruin my knees? I haven't told any doctors about this. someone told me taking this can reduce your bodies ability to fight off bacteria/viruses? is this true?

I didn't take it this morning and am going to stay away for a while. my knees have been getting worse and worse all year though.

ouch!

Hi Beth,

If you think that an anti-inflammatory apt to cause problems, wait until you see what the doc has in store for you... Merthotrexate, Imuran, Prednisone to name a few...

What is your list of symptoms and have you injured joints in
your younger years?

Any problems with swollen or stiff finger joints and which joints?

Ron

Since they aren't getingbetter on their own, you better start trying something to try to fix the problem, and not mask it.

My dad, I remember years ago when he would use Watkins white liniment on his knees, if it had not been for that I don't believe he could have been able to walk. He cured his knees with that white cream liniment. You can get it from some one who sells it. I found a woman here who was selling it on the internet. I just typed it the word Watkins and it came up with my answer.I learned she live within a short distant from me. I would not be with out it. It is so good for anything like this. I needed it for my hand where i fallen and hurt it. I went to the doctor and they exrayed it but nothing was broken. I wished I had thought about the liniment might have saved me from a doctor's visit and xray. I just massaged it on my hand twice a day for about a week and it was ok. After having it hurt me for months.

Hi Ron

it's really only the knee. i am lucky. I DO NOT want to go on steroids. my uncle has ankylosing spondylitis. my dad has had both of his knees replaced. this sort of thing runs in the family. I bought glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM tonight at GNC and will take that b/c I have heard it is really helpful. I am not taking the ibuprofen anymore! it isn't doing anything. I am going to see a rheumatologist but she can't get me in until September. I also am doing some knee strengthening exercises. this knee has been bad as long as I remember, but there is bad (manageable, still do all I want) and BAD swollen awful painful stiff trouble going up stairs. it's in the latter category right now.

thank you for listening,

Beth

I have found MSM's to be very different in what they might help. I have 3 that fixed 3 different problems and 4 that did nothing. The one that fixed my knee problem was Natrol brand. I have only used Nature's Bounty Glu/Chon so if you don't get any relief. These are ones I would recomend. I would also try cod liver oil since it cured one of my knee problems. Probably a synovial joint fluid one.

Be careful to eat with the drug. I took it post operatively for about 6 weeks and ended up with an ulcer. Have you tried Glucosamine/chondrotin? It helped my knees before. It rebuilds cartilage over time.

Beth,

ALL NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) help symptoms only in the short run while they are speeding up the damaging effects of the disease in the long run.

See the archives about why this is. For one thing, they ALL damage the lining of the gut and so aggravate LGS which is now known to be directly related to the arthritic process itself.

Let us know what you learn.

Hi Beth, I am sure you should listen to Dr Stoll, but it would not hurt to try the liniment also I told you about? It will stop just about any kind of pain and heal the sore knee trust me. I have ordered me another bottle it only cost 7 dollars a bottle and is quite large so will last a long time I would not be without it. I know people who use this and say the same thing.

just thought I would tell everyone!

5 days off the advil, and my knees feel better already. swelling down significantly, and aches but not a big deal as it was before. then again I have not exercised in 5 days either.

I started with the glucosamine, condroitin, MSM on Wednesday too.

thank you for your help, I am hopeful the knee will continue to improve. I will go for a walk later and see how it feels.
