Hi Paul.

I like the kind from GNC (believe it or not...I know they're not top-o-the-line with most things, but I like their MSM stuff)...it's Trimedica, or something like that.

I get the capsules in the blue bottle.

Or you can order some really good stuff from a company at pennysaved.com. They are very nice people; I ordered from them once.

I would rec. you take a good amount of C because MSM works with C much better...1000 mg with each dosage is what I've usually done.

Hope that helps,
Dianne

Thanks Dianne!

How much are you taking?

I am pretty big 6 ft 220, should I take more than 3 grams per day?

Paul

Dianne, my only concern with the large amount of C is that it can interfere with copper absorption. Copper anemia can cause MORE joint pain, due to elastin tissue breakdown. Copper is essential for strong ligaments and connective tissue.

different brands helped different things

Paul,

I tried MSM for knee pains that cod liver oil didn't help
this time. I bought Nature's Bounty brand and it didn't do
a Thing for my knees but solved a long standing sinus
problem. I bought Sundown brand just to have more on hand
for later since that was my favorite brand for suppliments.
That cured severe muscle aches from minor physical activity
that is a result of a chemical injury. Natrol brand was on
sale for 1/2 price so i figured, what the heck, I'll use it
and That solved my knee problem. Spring Valey brand seemed
to give me more stamina which I surely needed.

I rarely need to take them for what they helped after
taking a few of the pills or caps. the Natrol took about 10
days to fix my knees. The pains came back in 3 mo but got
rid of them again in about 2 weeks but I forget to take
things and the knee pains were only happening when I strained
them moving in an awkward position. the pain has been gone
for a few mo again and I rarely take the MSM for it.

Some people claim that MSM did nothing for them and others
say it took months. I am lifting now and have NO pains from
lifting except when I strain a muscle like right now the
bottom end of my biceps are sore. I over extend them I guess
Before MSM even food shoping tore me up for days and so much
so that i couldn't even get comfortable. Now lifting doesn't
hurt a bit and I am not taking the MSM. I stock up and have
about 4 bottles of the ones that helped the most. I foget
how many I have at home and buy them on sale to make sure
I have some.

Paul, at 190lbs I tend to go with higher dosing for supplements. I assume that dosage is based on average body weight, although supplement makers never state this on the labels. Also, a man's average weight is obviously different than a woman's. I advise my mother to go with lower dosing because she weighs under 100lbs. But for me, a dose of 1-3 caps a day means 3 caps.

Dianne,

I didn't need C to get the benefits of MSM but did try
some after I saw it recomended but reg C didn't agree with
me and it took me a while to spring for ester C at 2X the
price. That helped me, making me Need to exercise but I didn't see
any link to the MSM since I hadn't taken the MSM in weeks
and rarely take either unless i am trying to fix something.

Pete,

I am 6'+ and 200lbs and take the minimum to produce a result
When I used to take a multi vit that cut muscle aches in
half, more than one did nothing more. I did start breaking
coated pills and they would work faster. Trying so many
things a lot of times I will try half of a big pill and
ease into it.

Paul,

I've heard you can go safely *very* high without experiencing toxicity. The quote I remember was (paraphrasing here) "MSM is second to drinking water in terms of toxic levels" meaning that you're about as in danger of toxicity with MSM as you are drinking glasses of water per day. (grin)

I would highly recommend that pennysaved.com site. They really know their stuff about MSM and colostrum and Noni and that kind of thing. It's a man and his wife...they actually took the time to call me back personally, long distance, to answer my MSM questions.

I'm 120 lbs by the way, and at one point I was taking 8 grams per day.

If the C bothers you, try to get it supplemented via a food source (oranges, kale, spinach) because I know MSM works by using the C your body has...so if you're not supplemented you might be running low on the C you regularly take in...

Good luck,
Dianne

Vince, makes perfect sense! I'm right at 6', and I actually take one of everything except the chromium, I take 2 200mcg caps. a day. When I start with the milk thistle, I plan to take more, but as you say, for a specific therapeutic purpose you might need more. I did say earlier that I interpret 1-3 caps. as 3 caps for someone over 150lbs, however I don't tend to follow that approach for myself. Maybe I should, but I agree with you that small quantities are often just as effective. I take one garlic a day, unless I'm feeling really bad, then I may take 5. Maybe like you, I'm afraid I'll start sprouting something or growing a fungus on my elbow, or looking like Jim carey in "the Mask."

I take MSM also. I'm pretty little and take a 1000mg tablet a day. Been doing it for a couple months now and no problems.

I had been posting earlier re: joint weaknesses and MSM:
fyi: I began taking what seemed to be an educated recomended dosage of 15-20g/day per a book I bought at the same store (mini book dealing only with MSM) three days after beginning that therapy I was bed ridden with stomach weakness for 4 days! Headaches afterward for 3. My knees and spine seemed to get 50percent better at only 500mg, but I read 10-20g was 'detox' dosage. Because of how insistant this little pamphlet book was re: how non toxic MSM was, I did not connect my illness with the stomach weakness(lack of ability to digest on my own- LGS symptoms at their worst). Until I spoke with my sister, working in a whole foods store, who angrily reminded me to not blindly believe everything I read. She went on to say how most of the smaller books in the vitamin business are published in some way by the manufacturer, and further, that nearly 80percent of customers purchasing various MSM brands at her store in her experience tried to return the products saying it prevented them from being able to eat, ie: same symptoms I have been grappling with the last week. I had excellent results in my joints with 1000mg /day, and made myself extremly weak and ill with 18g/day. I am slowly beginning to be able to eat foods other than rice and bananas, and strongly encourage all who read this to listen to their bodies! Obviously without a doctors supervision all 'therapies' really call for one to be highly perceptive re: effects of whatever one undertakes! I MUST HAVE TEMPORARILY LOST MY MIND. Only because I was desperate and unwilling to pay for a good doc yet. Or do my homework. MSM rocks, but there has GOT to be a hell of alot we (or I) do not know about it yet. All brands differ, and many folks might have sensitivies to what food MSM might be derived from in the different brands.

Just something from me anyone interested...

We live and learn but it is always better to Sneak Up on
anything we take and see how our bodies handle it. What
doesn't bother one person can be devistating to another.
Best to err on the side of too little. I have been taking MSM for
about a year and probably have consumed 150g total and it
only took a few grams of some brands to fix what they did.
2 brands gave me a dull headache and louder ear ringing so
I didn't take them again. I'll let Others Detox with it. I
rarely take it after it fixes what it did though I will
try it to try to help something else or in combo with
something new I try to see what might happen with them. I
also like waiting at least 20 min to see if Anything I take
causes a negative reaction before adding something else so
I might be able to figure out what caused a problem or
compounding one.
