Halfway to step one

Posted by Mike Kramer on December 04, 1998 at 18:39:12:

I have been following this board for several months but never really reached step one. I never saw a biofeedback expert. I suppose I thought it would cost too much and the surroundings would be too different to be able to generalize to my own SR practice.

So . . . I figured I'd take a shortcut. Of course Walt is always telling us that he has already given us all the shortcuts, but if I were already a master at resisting temptation I probably never would have needed to search for the information this board provides.

A little while back there were a lot of posts about biofeedback devices. I finally took the leap and purchased one. It arrived today and I just used it.

I closed my eyes and listed to a tone monitoring my galvanic skin resistance. If I understand the manual, after 15 or 20 minutes I had a 620% change in GSR. The machine maxes at 700%. I don't find my relaxations to be very deep, or even that relaxing. The manual says, regarding a 700% change, "it would take considerable skill to master this level." It adds that you don't need to get a 700% change to get beneficial results. I always considered myself a practitioner of unskilled relaxation so I am dumbfounded by the results.

Even when doing SR I am thinking about work, relationships, money, health, dinner, etc. Anyone else have experience with lower price ($100) home devices? (Or am I getting my due for not visiting a professional?)

If an anxious neurotic like me were really a master relaxer I can't imagine what kinds of stress and tension "normal" nonmasters endure.

I'll keep plugging away at this no matter what, but I'd be curious to hear of others' experiences.

All the best,
Mike

Hi, MIke.

I know of no way to predict who will be a Master relaxer prior to their trying it. It is a little like ( if you will bear with the simile) trying to predict the intelligence of a murderer. There are VERY intelligent ones & some pretty dumb ones.

This is the "magic" of the biofeedback machine. It will tell you right away.

With that much response if you have cataloged how you did it, AND how it felt to be "there", you might do just as well with a RadioShack gsr for $60.

NOW, the chore will be for you to discipline yourself to do it at least twice a day for 20 minutes as described in the note about it on the homepage of this site. Knowing how to do it does not help unless you DO do it.

You just start ahead of the rest of us because you have a "knack".

Walt

Whoops! I was unclear. I am new to biofeedback, but have been doing SR for years. I just thought I wasn't doing it very well. Who knows! Maybe the first reading I got yesterday was just a fluke. I'll keep you posted of my progress or regress.

Thanks Walt, as always, for your encouragement and enlightenment.

I think I'm in the same kind of place as Mike is regarding SR. Always things on my mind thru it. I thought this meant it wasn't working.

Walt, am I right in understanding your answer to Mike, that you feel he is succeeding?

Where is a good place to learn about the biofeedback monitoring devices that are available? Also, a source of tapes that might help?

Thanks,
gerry

Dear Gerry,

There has been a lot of discussion about this in the past 2 months. Before that the information is in the archives.

For the biofeedback, thy (800) 477-8892 and aapb@resourcecenter.com
