scoliosis operation 20yrs ago still causing problems.....

I was operated on in the UK when I was 18 (and niave) to correct a curvature of my spine which I was not aware of until a routine examination. I was whipped onto the operation table with little explanation and my spine was 'straightened' and a steel rod inserted, 6 weeks on a striker bed, 6 months in full body plaster and virtually no physio or advice. Not suprisingly, 20 years later (I am now 37) I increslingly suffer from constant chronic back-pain (mostly lower back.) I have completly changed my lifestyle (which certainly helps) and have lived on a sailing yacht for the last 4 years (I do not actively do any of the sailing because of my physical limitations) I really want to help myself because I know the problem will not go away - it will probably get worst. Searcing the web for more info is fascinating but I'm now in Malaysia and all the sites point to usa for further help. Any advice?

Julie,

I can't answer your guestion, however, can refer you to the archives of this board for further information in the event you haven't had the opportunity of reading them.

You were very young to go through this sort of operation. My neighbors oldest girl had scolioisis and was very thin. Some sort of operaiton was recommended to her parents and they refused to sign and consent papers. That's been quite a while and I don't know the outcome as I moved temporarily to my parents home several years ago before moving back to my house.

Good luck kiddo

Hi, Julie.

The first thing you need to do can be done anywhere. Go to the glossary for any unfamiliar terms and then to the archives until you understand what you need to do and why.

If you had been told about bracing, before the surgery, dealing with that cause and getting Rolfed would have prevented the need for the surgery and your life would have been totally different.

Bracing is and has always been your problem.

Let us know what you learn and how you do.

Walt
