SR Skilled Relaxation and bracing, does it get worse before it gets better

I started SR protocol about 2 months ago. At first it was hard, then got easier and I started enjoying it, then I have been having these episodes of intense muscle tension/ bracing, that is so bad it makes me want to cry, it's all over and not going away. It feels almost unbearable to sit with it and continue SR, but I am. I have been wondering if I am developing Fibro or something. The tension feels like a very wired feeling all over my body and I can't release it.

I am using a biofeedback machine (stress eraser) and most days I am getting to the relaxation response.

I have a history of very low adrenals, highly sensitive nervous system, anxiety/ panic and reflux. I have been avoiding SR for years and trying everything else because it's so hard for me to relax. But finally nothing else worked and I came back to it. I had good results like week 2 and 3 and then it's been worse ever since. I eat a very clean organic wholefoods diet and have for years. I am taking a bunch of supplements for my adrenal / health issues, including a lot of magnesium but nothing seems to help the recent muscle tension. I have never had this tension like this until starting SR.

I have also noticed a recent reaction to nightshades and wonder if that has anything to do with it?

Anyway, I want to keep doing the SR, and plan on it, even though I have so much resistance. I am just wondering if anyone else had this type of experience with SR, and is it normal for the bracing to get so much more intense for so long?

Congratulations, Jennifer!

Your experience is one of the best to "certify" that you are going in the right direction. You are finally becomming aware of what you have been doing to your body all these years. "This, too, shall pass!"

Be sure to do your SR at least twice a day so as to get over this phase quicker.

Let us know how you do. You might start a diary of symptoms and experiences so as to better document your progress.

Walt

Jennifer,
Keep going with it. You will get there! There were stressful times when I used the stress eraser more frequently, which also helped. If you are able to afford massage, having a massage once a month might relax your muscles. It may be one of your supplements may be adding to your muscle tension, so you may want to take one at a time, and see if the muscle tension calms down, adding your supplements back one at a time as you check for any negative side effects. If you can drink green tea, you may try that too. I found that magnesium did not help my muscle tension.

Wow, so sounds like maybe this is just part of the process. My mind wants to convince me to stop doing the SR because I feel worse than when I started, it seems counter intuitive to keep doing it in a way, but it makes sense at the same time. I do know I have years of accumulated bracing. I just had no idea how bad it actually was, could I have been just unaware of it all this time? I also feel like there are layers of it. At first SR felt good to me, and then I feel like I hit this super uncomfortable burning/ wirey muscle tension thing, and it's been here for a month. It makes me feel like I am going crazy and I want to just crawl out of my skin, but I can't get away from it. It feels insurmountable at times.

I read these forums about 10 years ago and had a session with Dr. Stoll, I did try all the quick fixes and nothing else worked, so I feel like SR is what I have avoided the most, and probably what I need the most. Would love to hear anyone else's stories about this, I do get discouraged, and start convincing myself that this can't be right what I am feeling and should stop/ give up. It helps to hear what other's have been through and that this could be a normal part of the process.

Thanks for your response Dr. Stoll.

Keep in touch. Your diary will help you stick to it as you see documented improvements.

Thanks for your response. I have seen that you have recommended Rolfing and Deep Tissue massage to people for this. (I also have costo) When I get deep tissue lately I have noticed that I "brace" during the massage because it hurts, and I feel like it actually causes a flare up of soreness all over for up to a week. Do you think getting lighter massage is better in my case?

Jennifer, you are paying for the massage, so tell them what you want. I know a deep massage is better for you, but I am a sissy-la,la when it comes to pain and I don't let my gal dig too deep.

Hi Jennifer,

Negotiate the depth of pressure with your therapist. She should be paying attention and noticing when you tense up (although with some people its hard to spot). You and she should find a place that is comfortable so you feel like you're getting work, but not tensing.

Also, learning to relax when someone is working deeply on you is part of the process.... does she coach you to breathe slowly and deeply and send energy to the area being worked on? Those things can help tremendously.

Sometimes massage does have a period afterwards where a person is sore, but usually that is for about 2 days. Longer than that... I agree with Steve, sounds like backing off a bit would be more productive for you.

Best wishes,
Jan

Jennifer,

Listen to Jan (and Steve, too) since she is our resident expert. I know I learned the truth of the sttement regarding this when I got into massage, Rolfing, etc.: Body work is like a "dance". The masseur presses anhd the recipient gives in. I quickly learned that I could make any pain go away if I just gave in to the pressure.

I envy you the "journey" of discovery.

Walt

S,

I have always wondered that, too. My guess has been that it is human nature: we tend to put off what is hardest for us and what is hardest is usually what we need the most.

We tend to do what we like first. If we try a new exercise, diet or prodram like SR, we expect/wish for instant results. If there not forth comming, we can get discoraged. We read on the board that Jan can do SR falling off a log and have wonderfull health improvements and we can get envious.

Hey Steve,

I think you and Walt are the best SR practitioners around. I do pretty well but can't compare to either of you!

Best wishes,
Jan

Sounds like a good guess to me, Walt.

Sometimes it takes a LOT of pain to motivate people to stop procrastinating doing something that is hard for them to do.

Best wishes,
Jan
