I started having my mercury fillings removed about a month ago, and right after I started the process came across a distressing article about the recent discovery that novacaine (and other numbing "caine" cousins) are highly carcinogenic. So now I'm left wondering which is the lesser of the two evils.
The first amalgam I had replaced was the largest on a back molar. The tooth needed both a root canal and a crown. It looks like almost all of the teeth (and there are about 9 more to go) will need crowns, says the dentist, because of the size of the fillings. My teeth are in great shape, especially given my age (50), and I feel uncomfortable having them all crowned, but I really want the mercury gone. So in addition to that concern (not to mention the added expense), there's also the novacaine issue. Because of the apparent need for crowns, I think each quadrant will need at least 2 separate jabs.
I would really appreciate hearing any experiences with this.
