Dr. Stoll - question on Diabetes 2

Posted by Rosemarie on March 20, 2001 at 09:02:07:

My husband is making wonderful progress and his blood sugar is consistently around 87- 97 - now that he is eating the right kind of food...willingly, I might add.

However he IS on Avandia and Glugophage which I would like to eliminate of reduce eventually. Our doctor has no experience/knowledge in alternative ways but willing to listen and work with me. I've heard and read about Chromium having a positive effect on blood sugar and wondered if you can point me in the right direction. Are there certain things like Chromium we could try. DO YOU TAKE Chromium, Dr. Stoll?

I wouldn't do anything without the consent of the doctor as my husband's condition is precarious (Coumadin, etc.) but if I had enough backup data we might come to an agreement and experiment a bit.

Would appreciate a little guidance from you.

Thanks!
Rosemarie

Hi, Rosemarie.

Chromium MIGHT help IF he is deficient. Since there are no tests, yet, that I know of, for chromium deficiency in the individual, your best bet would be to start him on an easily absorbed form and see what happens to his blood sugar.

He is very close to the level where he might have a hypoglycemic reaction so you will have to watch him very closely in case the chromium helps a lot. I take chromium every day in my multiple and have for 20 years. I do not think that it had any effect on MY blood sugar but it is an essential nutrient that works in this area of physiology.

Hope this helps.

Walt
