middle ear infection- otitis media

Posted by concerned mom on July 29, 2001 at 04:50:40:

Hi doc, our son is 18 months old and had 5 ear infections last year and now on his fourth this year. Under medical advise we treated them all with antibiotics, and are now looking at the possibly of surgery for grommitts in both ears. Can you advise natural alternatives to antibiotics (eg- homeopathy) or the advisability of grommitts surgery- benefits/risks etc. It has weighted on my mind the danger of hearing loss if we don't treat our son in some way- especially as he is at an age where he is learning to speak and trying to listen to sounds to replicate them. We hope you can help us or put us in contact with other email sites on the otis media issue.
Thanks

Hi - I do not have a professional opinion, but I have had many experiences with otitis media with both my children and granddchildren.
One of my granddchildren had many up until the age of 4, having fewer as he got older. My other two are now 8 and 10 and had many ear infections as babies, with one having more than the other. They hear perfectly. Doctors are more reluctant to give antibiotics at the first sign of a red ear, but when my son was small, penicillin was given, and I remember having the doctor tell me that he had red ears even when he didn't complain of an earache! He has had allergies all his life and has had to have tubes inserted several times. He even had to have them put in just two years ago at 40 years old! (he had gotten a bad cold from his son). But his hearing is perfect. I just want you to know that ear infections in young children are very common.
As their ears develop they get fewer infections, and some develop more slowly than others. Raisa

Two things that seem to work extremely well is 3% hydrogen peroxide (fill each ear. He will hear fizzing and possibly popping or crackling sounds. This is the hydrogen peroxide killing yeast, bugs, and other pathogens. When the sounds slow down or stop, empty the ear. The peroxide will not pass through the ear drum. It will be absorbed by the skin in the ear. I have done it many times. Do this to both ears. Can be done several times a day.)

The other is chiropractic. Chiropractic adjustments have done wonderful things for ear infections, especially in children. They are not supposed to claim that they can help this but it IS the case. The combination of these 2 things may help a lot.

Other alternative to antibiotics would be colloidial silver, there is also a spray called Ionic silver. This works very well. But don't forget to give your son probiotics after antibiotic treatment. The best flora product to date is FLORA SOURCE. Look it up on the web. Right now, there is really nothing better.

I hope this helps you

Listen to Helping you and Raisa. Very good info. I have the distinction of being an adult that suffered from many ear infections as a child. I had tubes, everything. Spent most of the first seven years of my life on antibiotics. I eventually had to have the three bones in my inner ear and part of my eardrum replaced with plastic. I am lucky that my hearing has been very good in the last 29 years, in spite of that.

Many years ago I had the good luck of finding an ENT who was knowlegable (unfortunately, I didn't know him as a child). His advice to avoid ear infection was this:

1) Keep the ear dry. If you get water in the ear, use alcohol to dry it out. This one of the reasons why he gets infections. Just washing his head will get water in his eat. I suggest a product you can buy at any drug store called Swim Ear (or Swimmer's Ear). It's basically alcohol and boric acid. Alcohol alone will also work well. Do this after every time he bathes or goes in a pool.

2) If he can, have him hold his nose and blow, just enough to pop his ears, two or three time a day. I don't know why this works, but I DO know it works.

Hopefully your son will not have to endure what I went through. And I do feel that my current medical condition is partially based on the massive antibiotics I received as a small child. I have successfully avoided ear infections since I started doing the two above things.

Hope he's feeling better soon!

Hi, Concerned.

I am a bit bothered that no one mentioned the most important thing to do first. Raisa at least referred you to the archives where this information has been posted many times.

At least 90% of all recurrent otitis media in children is directly caused by dairy hypersensitivity. Within a month of TOTAL elimination of all dairy from the diet the ear infections stop.

Half of the rest of them stop with elimination of wheat.

Total elimination for 6-12 months may continue to resolve the problem even when dairy is then added (sparingly) back into the diet.

Since this is an immunological problem, only TOTAL elimination gives these dramatic results.

Let us know how he does. His shining example can help others with similar problems avoid surgery, recurrent antibiotic therapy--(Even though all the research for the past 20 years has said that they do not work for otitis media.) and ultimate hearing loss. Conventional medicine is trying to ignore these statistics even though they have been known for at least 15 years. Could it be just because this information does not require a prescription???

Walt
