Dear Dr. Stoll, I can't believe how well the massages are working . I have not had any of the achiness that I had before which has meant I have been able to do more. Thank you again for the advice. I am still working on the relaxation and hypnosis and I am sure that is helping. I am still waiting for your book . I guess it has got held up with the Christmas rush or maybe it has got lost on its way to N.Z.I have found a copy of Dr.Pelletiers book so will pribably buy that in the meantime. Thanks again. Margaret.
I was diagnosed with the Epstein Barr Virus in August of this year after experiencing a sudden onset with high fever, extreme fatigue and flu like symtoms. I had been in a high stress middle management position for the last 4 years, had always been person who tried to cram as much as I could into a day and crash at the end of it after a couple of drinks, only to start up again the next day. I have always been active and have always taken great care in eating well, taking my vitamins (mega doses) and exercising.
I still have this need to push myself, but I can't move any faster. My brain sometimes doesn't engage and I can't climb a short flight of stairs without being out of breath. Mowing the lawn is out of the question. I feel like a slug. Something has been taken away from me and I can't get it back.
I'm 50 years old and feel like I'm 90. I feel like time is going to run out and I'll never feel like I used to again. In short, I'm frustrated!
I am starting on a regimen of MSM, CoEn10, Vit C,E, candida enzyme, Milk Thistle, and Golden Seal + some other Vites and minerals.
I feel the need to exercise, but everytime I do it seems to knock me out. My muscles are have begun to atrophy.
Any advise from my brothers and sisters with EBV who know what I am experiencing is welcome. A few wise words from the savy medical community would be helpful as well.
Thank you.

I have been given a variety of diagnoses over the years including lupus, vasculitis, thyroditis, Raynaud's, GERD, chronic fatigue syndrome, etc. Whatever they call it I continue to add to my symptom collection and am not functional enough to return to work. I would appreciate any suggestions that you might have. Do you know of physicians in the San Francisco Bay Area who could be helpful with my case? Also what is the difference between Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Epstein Barr? I thought the latter was eliminated as a causal factor in the illness.

Dear Bill,
It really sounds like your bodymind is sending you a message, doesn't it? ALL great physicians have considered that illness is the body's way of sending a message & is a great opportunity for the individual to learn to change what needs to be changed.
Your muscle fatigue is caused by the elevated lactic acid due to "bracing" . The most important thing for you to do in the long run is learn an effective skilled relaxation technique & practice it at least 20 minutes twice a day for at least a year.
In the short run, getting a deep, total body, therapeutic massage 3 times a week for 2 weeks would do you wonders. However, it would only last a few months. The main reason for telling you this is so you will learn that I know what I am talking about.
The most efficient way for you to finally get in control of your life again would be for you to read a copy of my new book (link below).
THEN, if you still have questions, write again. If you would take the time to share your experiences as you improve, with the BB participants, you could help a lot of others to not have to go through what you are experiencing right now.

Dear Dr. Stoll,
Thank you for responding to my recent e-mail. I will look into message therapy this week.
I have used relaxation techniques in the past, but stayed with it only a short while. Lately I haven't had the time. I never seem to have enough of it.
Can you tell me what "bracing" is and whether there are other ways of effectively eliminating lactic acid from your system other than massage?
I am currently taking CoEnQ-10, candida enzyme, 1000 mg vit C, MSM and other antioxidants. I have heard that Pycnogenol might also help. Am I on the right track here or do you have some other supplement I should consider or eliminate from my regimen?
Thank you for your response.

Dr Stoll,
I just came across your website today for the first time. I don't
have a question; I just want to say thanks for taking the time,
effort and expense to maintain the website. My husband suffers
from LGS, candidiasis, food allergies, etc, etc, and I was thrilled
to find a site that addresses these problems in such a helpful way.
His condition causes him to experience severe mental and emotional symptoms in addition to a variety of physical ones, and I feared for years that he had some sort of mental illness. About 5 1/2 years ago, I began to believe that his mental problems had a
biochemical basis. Since then, I've been searching for answers as
to what is the cause of his illness and how it can be treated.
(The search was severely hampered by our living overseas since Dec 1992.) Thanks to the information I found on your website, I feel
today that we're closer than we've ever been to overcoming this
dreadful condition.
Wishing you a happy 1998,

Dear Bill,
The most important thing you can do is learn to understand the "big picture". Since that is the reason I wrote my new book---------(link below).
Pycnogenol is but another slant on the "antioxident cascade". There are at least a dozen already identified and a new one discovered every couple of months. This is NOT the solution to your bracing (total body muscle tension due to the fight or flight storage from the hypothalamus). They will not hurt & probably will help other things.
Probably the reason you have not "stuck with" your relaxation techniques is that they were giving you nothing BUT relaxation. Without any technique actually producing the alpha/theta rhythm in the hypothalamus, all of the wonderful things you have heard about these techniques will not happen for you. When they do not, most people decide that they are not worth the effort & let them drop. When you are reaching the "relaxation response" you are getting 24 times as much reversal of the bracing every minute than if you were asleep------20 minutes = 8 hours of sleep.
A good time to put in a new effort in this direction would be as you are getting your massages since they powerfully push you in that direction already. Read what I have on my home page about "Skilled Relaxation" (link on this page).
Extensive use of a hot tub whilrpool can help with the lactic acid but is a lot more stressful on your system. If you could get the type of massage I recommended every day, this WOULD happen much faster. I know of no other way to get it out faster.

Dear Dr. Stoll,
Thank you for your response to my problem. I started to use the relaxation technique I learned in a stress management course I took several years ago. I have a tape which lasts about 20 minutes. It starts by having you tense your all of your muscles for about 30 secs. Then you concentrate on relaxing, then relaxing more of the key stress points of the body. You feel relaxed, so relaxed in fact that its hard not to go to sleep.
What is the relaxation response you are talking about? Am I on the wrong track?
On the massage front, I note that there are several types of "therapeudic massage": Swedish, Sports, myofascial, neuromuscular, etc,..Which do you recommend?
Lastly, what is this lactic acid build up anyway? I used to experience lactic acid build up when I was playing sports, or exerting myself and the body would become fatigued; why the lactic acid build up when I have barely done anything physical OR mental?! Does the lactic acid stay in your joints and tissues if you don't get rid of it. Is this where the massage comes in?
A lot of questions...This illness has me baffled. I don't seem to be able to get a handle on it.
Bill Gills
Dear Doy,
We MDs LOVE to put names on things. We get paid a lot for doing just that. However, naming things has nothing to do with knowing anything about WHY something is happening.
Both chronic EBV and CFS are caused by the same processes. If I were you, I would look deeper into your own experience & begin to understand what the message is that your body is sending you.
Still the best place to start would be to read a copy of my book (link below). THEN, if THAT makes sense to you, the references in the back would open the door to your path to wellness. Especially read "Mind as Healer, Mind as Slayer" by Kenneth Pelletier, PhD. You will find that his book was written about you. MY book gets into why this is happening so that you can figure out which approach will give you the most results with the least amount of investment of time, effort & money.
As you get well, please share your esperiences with the rest of us here on the BB. This increasingly common problem is TOTALLY unnecessary. The reason it exists at all is because we MD/DOs have a monopoly on medical thinking in this country. ANY Chiropractor of Naturopath could help you more.

Dear Cathy,
People cannot get either one of these without first having a compromised immune system. There are many resources for learning what I mean about that. Most conventional physicians do not recognize a stressed immune sytem till it fails. Things do not have to be THAT bad for one to get either of these.
This conventional short-sightedness reminds me of the idea that vitamin C deficiency is mostly not recognized until the person has scurvy. Knowledgable physicians know that people are not either perfectly healthy or they are dead. There is a wide RANGE of relationships to vitamin C between these 2 states of health. Even the federal government has recognized this last year by finally beginning to change the RDAs to the levels that produce OPTIMUM health (not just prevent death--which is what the RDAs have been based upon). This change is only after about 40 years of urging by physicians who cared enough to learn something new.
Immunity is the same way: there is a wide range of immune capacities between a perfectly functioning system & one that has failed.
Anyone who has both of these conditions would do well to learn what is being learned about what they could do to improve their immunity. In the meantime, surgical removal of the Basal Cell Carcinoma would be prudent.

Dear Bill,
First, clench your fist as hard as you can. How long can you hold it before you become fatigued so much that you CANNOT? Then, just wave your hand while supporting your elbow on something. How long can you do that? Probably a long time.
In both scenarios, you are using about the same energy in the muscle. Why do you get so fatigued clenching & not fatigued waving?
Oxygen & sugar are metabolized to create muscle contraction. The waste products are water, CO2 and lactic acid. While waving, you are washing out the waste products. While clenching you are trapping them in the muscle. Does this answer your question? Your whole body is "clenching" 24 hours a day.
Shiatsu, myofascial or neuromuscular (in that order) is what I would recommend.
The tape you mention is utilizing autogenics which is especially effective for someone who is "bracing" like you are. It still will not work for everyone. Your feeling like you might fall asleep is a good sign. However, you have to have something that will "let" you get to that point WITHOUT actually falling asleep. The best trick I know is for you to hold a heavy spoon in your hand. THEN, if you actually slip into "delta" rhythm you will lose muscle control (be asleep) and the spoon will drop & wake you up. The idea is to let yourself go but not go asleep AND DO IT GENTLY. Just pick up the spoon & go back to the last thing you remember doing. Eventually, you will be able to get there without going asleep.
Remember, you have had a lifetime of esperience that EVERY TIME you got into alpha/theta rhythm, you were on your way to sleep. Why wouldn't you have the tendency to slip past the rhythm we are talking about?
Walt
Dear Jim,
If everyone took the time to understand the situation like you have, I wouldn't have anything to do on this BB. I look forward to that day. In the meantime, I greatly appreciate your sharing like this. Testimonials are more important that anything I can say. I still have an interest in the benefit of exercise, but I am concerned that it will exacerbate my condition if I am generating more lactic acid than I can handle. What do you suggest? Lay off all together, light exercise? Can I expect my condition to improve with exercise or get worse?

If you will enter "EBV" or "Epstein Barr Virus" on the search function near the top of the bulletin board, you will get a ton of information. If you read the Home Page, you will get an idea of the big picture. Then if you are interested in becoming further educated and becoming an "expert in your condition" as Dr. Stoll would say, you can post your experiences and further questions here.

Dear Bill,
Light, repetitive exercise will actually help this. It is the unmoving tension that causes the accumulation. If you combine exercise with relaxation (or massage), be sure to do the exercise or massage BEFORE the relaxation. That magnifies the effect of the relaxation. Done the other way around they work against each other.

I try to pick what look like first time drop-ins who are casting about the net and who may not have taken the time to catch up with what is going on on the board. Like me, most folks get here through a narrow portal of a diagnosis. When they see a bigger picture, they discover that their symptoms are also a trail of bread crumbs left by the body in hopes of a return home to health (from the candy house of the leaky gut witch). :)
I know from my personal experience how important it is to hear directly from you, but I figure if they are not willing to put in the time to see what is here, they probably will not follow through anyhow. And anyone who examines the board will notice the effort you expend with those who are obviously taking the time and trying to be responsible.

In Reply to: Re: Epstien Barr Virus posted by Rachel on January 09, 1998 at 20:37:26:
Dear Rachel,
One of the things you MUST know is that once a virus overwhelmes a person's immunity sufficiently for that person to "get" that disease, the virus stays in every cell of the body for the rest of that person's life. This is true of every virus, bar none. IF the person's immunity gets low enough, the virus can become active again. This is what present day physicians think is happening to those with the high titers of EBV.
If you think about it, the answer is to do something about the immune reserves NOT to figure out a treatment for the virus--since there is none besides our God given systems.
The above information is but one of many reasons I say that your solution to this is to become knowledgable about your own condition--and not just what your doc deigns to tell you.
You cannot get enough vitamin C iin pill form to resolve this 100%. You CAN get enough to push the odds in your favor by taking ESTERIFIED vitamin C at the rate of about 6000 milligrams 3 times a day. If your stools get loose, it means that you are not absorbing all that you are taking & you should cut the dose by a couple a day untill the loose stools are gone. In most people that would be enough--if taken carefully for about 3 weeks. For those that it is not enough for a cure, the IV will be necessary.
Using tetracycline for this is ludicrous! Tetracycline is an antibiotic only effective against bacteria. The V in EBV stands for virus. ANYONE knows that an antibiotic has no effect against a virus.
As a matter of fact, since it will undoubtedly destroy many of your good bacteria in the gut (one of the most important links in your own immunity) it could only make EBV worse. This is known by the simplest first year medical student.
When you are ready to work on improving your immune system, write again, right here on this BB, so others might benefit from watching our communication AND your getting well.

However, I am not alone in my story, there are many books written about how this is a national policy by the AMA. At the end of my note on the website home page (about "Why My License was Revoked") there are many references about this that anyone would get angry reading.
One of the problems is that any physician experiencing this harassment cannot go to these programs on their own since the producers see it as "tooting our own horns". The contact has to come from people like you who know enough to recommend one of us to the show. The more people on the petition, of course, the more effective it is.

Dear Dr. Stoll: My question concerns my 18 year old son. In June 1997 he was very ill with sore throat, cough, and tiredness. He had a CBC with manual differential and a mono test. The mono test was positive. He was ordered to have complete bed rest for a few weeks, which he did. He seemed to recover from the illness but has had a sense of being fatigued since. Since December he has been incredibly tired, so another CBC was done with an Epstein Barre panel. The results indicate that he has a current infection with the virus. His doctors are stumped and said his first illness must have been something else that triggered a false positive result. He doesn't have any of the other symptoms that he had in the summer other than the exhaustion. Do you have any idea what could be doing on with him? Should he have any additional bloodwork at this point to rule out any other causes? His WBC was normal this time, but in June it was 18,000. Thank you for your insight into this perplexing problem.

I would like suggestions on treatment and other info. on the virus.
Thank you.

Use the search feature for this BB & read everything you can find that relates to your question.
THEN, if you still have questions, write again.
I am ashamed of my colleagues for still pretending that "there is nothing they can do". For them to say that is to say that they have learned NOTHING from all the research findings for improving the immune system that has occurred from AIDS research--just to mention one obvious thing.

Dear Dr.Stoll, I received your book Last week and your letter just after that. Thank you very much for your trouble. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your book and feel that I am finally on the right track after reading your book and using other pieces of advice yoiu gave me . I am hoping to start part-time work soon. I still have the odd tired day particularly if I over do things- is that normal? Also is it possible for people who have cfs to try the aerobics exercise you talk about ? I used to be a competitive athlete before I got the virus and cfs so I worry that I will over do it. Thanks again for your time and advice you have helped me so much. Margaret.

What you need right now is "tincture of knowledge".
The most efficient way for you to start getting it is by reading a copy of my book (link below).
THEN, if you still have questions, write again.
As you get well, I hope you will take the time to share your experiences with the rest of the BB participants. Others deserve to know that this is a totally unnecessary condition.

I have Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. If I am exposed to long, I can get down in the bed for days at a time. It feels llike I've been hit by a train, and the fatigue that goes with it. . . well when I was still trying to work full time, there were days that something as simple as taking a bath was so exhasuting that I ended up back in bed. In the past few years I've struggled with chronic prostatitis - and the Prostatitis newsgroup has recently recommended anti-candida programs as beneficial. I'd like to try again, but since you've moved, I have no source for Nystatin. Could you, or someone you could recommend in Ky. help me get a Nystatin prescription? I'd really appreciate it!

I just wanted to relate my latest experience with UltraClear in hopes it might help Nancy. A local chiropractor who fancies himself to be an expert in many health modalities (he has a clinic which includes an acupuncturist & a colonic therapist), prescribed UltraClear Plus, 6 scoops per day, for me to start on to help me with my chronic fatigue and chronic gut problems. After 3 days, I had to quit it because it made me sick. I had bronchial/respiratory problems from it and a general malaise and need to sleep 10 or 11 hours for a couple of days. I don't know if this was a "detox/healing crisis" type of reaction or what, but once I quit it, I recovered to my "normal" sick state. My theory is that the UltraClear products, the regular, sustain & plus all have too much rice syrup for people with chronic candidiasis (which I believe I have a systemic case of...I think it is throughout my lymph system for many years). I'm not knocking the products, but believe, like anything else, there are no cure alls and one has to be discerning in how one uses any product.

Dear Margaret,
Thank you for your testimonial & questions.
It would be hard for you to "overdo it" so long as you know that your heart is in good shape. HOWEVER, at this stage it is unlikely that you have enough energy to do it.
I think working on the skilled relaxation is the most important thing you can do right now. If you have enough energy to just take a walk an hour a day, do that too. As you start feeling better, consider your diet.
If you are champing at the bit, consider the 3 times a week deep, whole-body, therapeutic massages for 2 weeks. That will get you moving in the right direction fast.
Keep us up on how you do.

The first person I ever met with the diseaes was sick and bed ridden for almost three years and for the past two years has had no symptoms what so ever. The scay part is that it can pop up at any time.

A mono test came back negative, prompting my physician to to the EBV test. I am quite confused. It reads VCA-IgG 2.90, VCA-IgM 179, Ebv Early ag ab 81, and EBNA-G antibody 162. He referred me to a terrible Infectious Disease "specialist" who has not helped. I now have horrible swolen glands, my tongue has red spots covered in white "stuff." After reading I know you live in Florida as do I. If you can recommend a Dr. in the Palm Beach area that uses your approach it would be a blessing. I am not working so It will be a few weeks before I can get your book. I am taking lots of vitamins, resting, and eating great. I am 23 and am very scared.

Dr. Stoll,
My 17 year old son has recently been diagnosed with EBV. His worst symptoms appear to be chronic fatigue. He is extremely active and highly involved in athletics, to say the least. The doctor wants him to rest or his symptoms will presist. However he is in the middle of a three week soccer tournament in which he adamantly refuses to sit out. He assures me that he will rest once the tournament is over (please don't tell me to inforce parental control in this situation as we have been fighting like hens over this...the stress only aggrevates his condition and my self-control in the matter). We have reached a tentative compromise....for now.
My question is, is there a vitamin plan you could recommend to help combate his fatigue problem, especially during these next three weeks????

My 12 y.o. son has been having intermittent fevers between 101 and 104 since September with NO other symptoms. After several tests, his blood tested positive for EBV antibodies, and the specialist we saw told me yesterday that my son's symptoms are congruent with EBV/mono. However, I have fibromyalgia and my husband's cousin has lupus, so the doctor also told me to watch for any joint pain over the next year or two in case my son has juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. The doctor also told me that if this is mono caused by the EBV the fever should disappear soon and my son would not get mono again. This is the first website I've visited trying to learn about this. Thanks for all the postings.

Dear Jackie,
I think you are the one who left a message with the publisher yesterday & to which I responded, by phone, today. The clues you need to figure out which kind of professional you may need in your area ARE included in my book. The only thing I know of to help is for you to get that information under your belt & call the appropriate national organization (listed in the back of my book) for the kind of physician you may need. The only thing that would give you quicker results (although temporary) would be IV vitamin C (at least 50 grams a day for 5 days straight). You would have to call Dr Cathcart (also listed in the back of my book) at (415) 949-2822 for the closest doc who would know how to do this.
To understand WHY you have this, & what to do to keep it from coming back, you need the concepts in my book. We are talking about $13.65 for one book. If you are so close to your financial reserves as to not be able to afford that, you will never be able to afford any professional in your area anyhow. The information in the book would save you a lot of money with any physician you might see since you would take a lot less of her/his time when you see him/her.
I am NOT trying to hawk my book! I make no money from it anyhow. I am just trying to let you know the quickest & least expensive way to deal with this. What you need most is KNOWLEDGE, not treatment.

Dear Kate,
It is tempting to agree with you. However, it can be a lot more complex than that. The one thing I can be SURE of is that whatever is recommended MUST work. She cannot afford any failures.
If she is willing to share her entire health history with the public (here on the BB) I will be happy to tell her what I need to know and help her free. To save me time telling her, you could show her what I have under the Health Coaching Service (see link on my page). If she doesn't want to do this publically (and free), she has the option of doing what is described with the HC. My main purpose is to educate the public which is why I have been willing to donate so many hours of my time helping people on the net. Done privately, no one else will ever learn anything from it.
My feeling is that the most important thing for her to do is LEARN. The second most important thing is for her to learn an effective skilled relaxation technique & practice it at least 20 minutes twice a day.
She would learn a lot by reading a copy of my book (link below). Then, if she wanted to learn more, one of the books referenced in the back of my book: "Mind as Healer, Mind as Slayer" by Dr Pelletier.

I have fully exausted all of my finances with emergency room visits, endless tests, and a "specialist" who put me on antibiotics and said I had to let it "run it's course." At 23, I was working just under the required amount of hours to receive insurance. Something my employer does purposefully. My mother(luckily I still live at home) has been working nearly 13 hrs. a day to keep the bills paid. I found out yesterday that she has EBV, probably from me. That is why your book will be so helpful. I did not get the message from you yet about the doctor. I will be getting a refund (thankfully) from the IRS that will pay for it. Maybe you should not you assume that there was lack of compassion behind that answer. I saw it as a terse reply to a terse question. The thing is, in its own brief way, that one word answer said it all. If you had hung around the board for awhile reading posts you would know what that answer means, who Bob is, and how compassionate he is in giving of his time and knowledge to those who are truly motivated to take personal responsibility for their healing. Bob is a living example of what one can do about a debilitating disease process by using that one little word, "learn."
No doubt he was challenging Fran. I hope she realizes it and searches into past posts with the search function and reads all she can find. Then she would have some focused questions to ask to move her along her path to health.

Dear Friend,
These are NOT the symptoms of infection by the virus but from the causes behind the susceptibility to the virus. The person would not have the virus without the susceptibility factors so, OF COURSE, they would have the symptoms along with the blood results.
If you are interested in having a better understanding, there are plenty of references you can look to. You could start with the search feature of this BB & read everything you can find about this subject.
Then, if you want to know more, you could read "Mind as Healer, Mind as Slayer" by Dr Pelletier. This classic has been a best seller for more than 20 years and has had new editions many times. It is available in any library so you will not have to spend a cent--just the time to LEARN.
Until you know at least that much I think you should be careful about the "advice" you offer. Somebody might actually listen to it!

For him to have this diagnosis at this tender age, he has many worse exeperiences in the future until he decides to get serious about his health. His bodymind is just sending him a gentle message. He is going to have to become a student of wellness. My book is the best resource for him having the tools when he is ready (link below).
Until then, he could try at least 6 grams of ESTERIFIED vitamin C daily (in 2 divided doses). It could not hurt him & actually might do some good. he would be wise to keep it up for months after he is "well".

mono and Burkitts.,and if it's part of The Herpes Virus-Does
this mean EPV causes herpes or dirivative of Herpes? And is
this passed down through childbirth from either or one my parents. So EPV is something that cuuses other health problems-such as cancers-and why is that.? I was diagnosed

no swelling. What are the medical symptoms that make a Dr. say you may have EBV? Thankyou again for your time!

In Reply to: I'm sorry posted by Dianne on January 29, 1998 at 17:57:24:
Diane,
I can really understand your frustrations. I feel that the great majority of those that have found no relief from allopathic medicine also have found precious little relief from many of the alternative modalities that are routinely promoted. One thing is for sure -- they've spent a TON of money investigating both routes.
The reason that alternative medicine has such a poor track record is that the herbalist will herb your to death, the homeopath will be forever giving you different tinctures, etc. If you just stand around in any health food store for any amount of time you'll hear that "this is good for this, and that is good for that". Well, they might be good but they probably won't work -- that is unless the person using them are using them in an integrated manner. By that I mean incorporating it's use into some other modalities.
For example, given what you already know, how would you respond if a friend of yours approached you and asked if Vitamin C would be good for her? She constantly seems to have colds and upper respiratory infections. She also smokes a pack of cigarettes a day and eats a crummy diet.
You would know that while vitamin C would be 'good' that if she didn't get to the root of her problem (which in this case would be the smoking and poor eating habits) she would have little chance of regaining good health. Taking the vitamin C alone without integrating other modalities would be like taking a garden hose to a forest fire!
Now we come to you, who like so many others has done all the things you should (i.e. cleaned up your diet) but still hasn't found the one key that will 'unlock' your health problems. You talk to someone and there is this new supplement that costs $60. At first you hesitate buying it. Sixty bucks is a lot of money! Then you think about the thousands that you've already spent in your search and think that this could be the thing that is missing. Finally you throw it in your shopping cart and a month later you're adding that $60 in your mind to the thousands that you've already wasted............. Frustration city.
It's the same way with different health care practicioners. You're tired of feeling crummy and realize that your current doc isn't getting you better and you've pretty much exhausted all the things that he's suggested. He would have you be patient or re-try all the things that you've done before or even worse HE keeps pulling something new out of his hat that he didn't talk about last month -- and of course the whole time $$ leave your purse.
You decide to try a new doc. There are new tests, new diagnoses that are much different from those your last doc suggested, new things to try and of course big $$ spent by you in the process.
Am I getting close to what has happened to you and what you feel? Sounds like pretty good reasons to be frustrated to me!
Diane, I'm not sure if you have EBV or what your major health problem is. Why don't you fill me in on what symptoms you have and what you've been doing to date. All too often I've found that folks actually get worse due to some dubious advise -- especially in the area of diet.
By the way, thank you for your gracious apology.
Bob
In Reply to: Re: Hair Loss in Women posted by anon on January 29, 1998 at 10:34:52:
Dear Anon,
Massage & brushing MAY have a slight beneficial effect. However, if the cause is really a lack of circulation, it can only be because of the bracing of the head, neck & scalp muscles AND only by releasing that muscle tension can the circulation be improved significantly.
This is WHY it is so important for people to understand things in depth to resolve "incurable" conditions like this.
Consider the diabetic with poor circulation to the feet. It is extremely dangerous to put heat on the feet of this individual even though all NON-diabetics use heat to increase the circulation to the feet. WHY is that? It is because the diabetic process has reduced the blood flow to the small arteries of the feet. NOW, when one uses heat, the demand for oxygen is INCREASED to the skin but the diseased arteries cannot supply it. This greatly increases the risk of gangrene in the diabetic.
NOW, think about the scalp. If the muscle spasm is reducing the blood supply to the scalp--and one uses massage or brushing, which increases the demand for blood in the area-- these approaches might just make the problem worse.
THERE IS NO SHORTCUT TO GETTING RID OF THE LOSS OF BLOOD-SUPPLY FROM MUSCLE SPASM! One MUST learn & practice regularly an effective form of skilled relaxation (never within 2 hours of retiring) twice a day for at least 6-12 months. The protocol for exactly how to do this the most reliably & least expensively is in my book (link below) and on the homepage of this website.
I hope this clarifies this for you.
Walt
In Reply to: Re: Hair Loss in Women posted by anon on January 29, 1998 at 10:34:52:
Dear Anon,
I just realized that I did not respond to your other questions. I was too upset that my information about the circulatiojn had not been sufficient.
"Nutrition" is only meaningful when it refers to the stuff that gets into the cell & is utilized properly there. Unfortunatley, when people are "bracing" what you eat (at least the hardest things to absorb) may never get into the cell. The blood is how stuff gets from the gut to the cell & your "nutrition" already is blocked at that stage.
Obviously, some is getting through or your whole scalp would have fallen off. That means that what you take in orally might have some benefit. If I had your problem I would be taking high doses of antioxidents (at least 4 grams of esterified vitamin C and 800 units of vitamin E daily). I would also take about 100 milligrams of zinc (a cofactor of these antioxidents) and the essential oils I mention on the homepage of this website.
THEN, when you see your hair growing back in (associated with the absolutely necessary relaxation) I would keep up the antioxidents & oils till your hair was back to normal for at least 6 months. Then, the gradual reduction of this stuff (one at a time)--about every 3-6 months--would gradually let you learn what the maintenance dosage of each thing might be. If you are still practicing your skilled relaxation, you may need none of them. This will take you years of experimentation with hair loss being your only way to know when you have backed off too much.
Making sense?

Dear JSF,
You need a copy of my book (link below).
It is the loss of immune reserves that causes people to be susceptible to EVERYTHING you mentioned. Until you understand that, there is little I can tell you that will make sense.
The Epstein Barr virus is the one that causes mono & is related to Burkitt's Lymphoma.
ANYONE who is susceptible to one is susceptible to them all.
The symptoms presently ascribed to Chronic EBV are NOT due to the vitus but to the mechanisms that cause the susceptibility.
Once you have that information under your belt, if you still have questions, write again.
