Help !!! Black spots floating in front of my eyes !!!

Posted by Nadia [1899.376] on December 30, 2004 at 11:51:18:

dear Dr. Stoll,
I've just returned from a long walk and the bright sunlight was hitting my face.
Anyway, I've been home for a while and now there are many strange black spots floating in front of my eyes....mostly my right eye. The spots are mostly on the right side of
my vision.
Could this be some kind of strain from the sun hitting my eyes ? I am so scared.
Please help !
Nadia

How's your BP? Have you had it checked lately?

Are you talking about floaters those squiggly things?

the sun and free radicals are a combination that can cause this... I would wait and if it doesn't go away for the most part, consult an opthamaologist...
It could also be an occular migraine (had one once, no pain at all) and if you feel sickto your stomach afterwards that is a sure clue it could be that...

What day, what time- did this occur and how are you now?

dear Jean, Michele and D,
thank you all for your quick responses.
Yes, they are those squiggly things....like fuzzy little bees floating around before your eyes. In my case, it was only on the right side. They are not round dots, they are shaped oddly like little bats or bees floating around.
Anyway, it's about 5 hours later and instead of several of them in my vision, now there is only one left but it's very annoying.
I did call the opthomalogist and he said that since there is no pain or blurred vision, that they are only floaters and will eventually go away. This was his opinion.
My blood pressure is usually normal. But believe me, I was scared because both my parents had strokes, so anything strange like this is very disturbing.
I will see how it is tomorrow; and thanks again.

That makes more sense, Michele.

I mentioned BP cause the only time I had trouble with it was when I had toxemia with my first pregnancy. After I gave birth I saw these spots and asked them to check my BP not knowing what else it could have been.

I was right and they said I was lucky for the sign cause most don't know when their BP rises.

I also developed floaters after this pregnancy.

I don't know why she would get them all of a sudden unless it was an occular migraine. I hope she lets us know the outcome.

D

Goodmorning everyone,
I appreciate your concern and I'm here to give you an update on me.
I woke up this morning with one floater still "harassing" me... it's so annoying. And moreso, I am worried about it
even though I called an Opthomologist yesterday who didn't think it was serious.
D, you said you developed floaters after your pregnancy,
so how long did they last ??? Was it hours, days, or weeks ?
I was hoping mine would be gone overnight.
Ocassionally I would get a spots for a few seconds every now and then and I hear from people that they experienced the same thing, but now I'm worried that I still have it since yesterday.
I walk in the bright sun almost everyday (the sun is very
strong in the mountains)but if the sun caused it, why would I have it only in one eye ?
Could it be a strain of some kind ?
I'll keep you posted and thanks again.
very sincerely,
Nadia

Hi, Nadia.

When you fix your gaze on one spot, do the spots move?

Get a white paper and put a dot in the middle.

dear Dr. Stoll,
The one floater I have left today (there was much more activity yesterday and a few more floaters)doesn't seem to be moving too much when I fix my gaze on one spot as you suggested (just a tiny bit).
What is this supposed to mean ?
Thank you so much for your response and wishing you good health in the New Year.

Thanks, Nadia.

If the floaters move when you have fixed your gaze on one point, they are little pieces of coagulated protein in the anterior chanber and of no practical significance.

If they stay fixed under those same circumstances, you need an ophthalmological examination since it may be a retinal problem that can be treated with lasers.

Let us know what you learn.

Dr. Stoll .... I took the test again !!!!

goodmorning Dr. Stoll,

Thanks for looking in on me.
I took the test again this morning and it seems that when I
have a fixed gaze on one point, the one floater I have does move around a little bit.
Also, is it significant that on Thursday when all this started, I had about 4 or 5 big floaters. And today, Saturday, there is only one floater the size of a bee ??
What I'm asking is could this be a sign it's on its' way out ?
It's so annoying, but more importantly it is causing me
worry.
I'll await hear from you again.

Thanks, Nadia.

That is a pretty big "floater"! With anything that big, I would at least get an examination and make both of us worry less.

dear Dr. Stoll,
Thank you for your sincerity and concern.
Today, Sunday, I still only have one floater and today it's a little smaller than a bee.
As you know, when all this started on Thursday, I had at least 4 or 5 large floaters the size of little bats.
So, is this a sign it is slackening off ?
I hope you're not tired of hearing about my bees and bats.
Very sincerely,
Nadia

Thanks, Nadia.

The fact that they have been the "size of bats and bees" is not reassuring and the fact that they have disappeared so fast is not reassuring either.

This is, more and more, looking like a vascular problem with the retina and being something that needs treatment before it becomes permanent.

Better safe than sorry.

Let us know what you learn.

Nadia, I am curious. I have floaters also but they are usually threadlike and maybe 1/8 inch long. What kind of bee and bat are you speaking of? Could you use centimeters or inches instead? A bee is probably 1/2 inch in size and would cover at least half your eye ball.
