To Walt - regarding fasting on water only

Posted by Barb on September 09, 2003 at 15:33:09:

Hi Walt, I've been reading a book on "Fasting and Eating for Health" by Joel Fuhrman, M.D. He talks about the body healing itself when you fast on water only. He states a person should be able to go 40 days if they have been eating healthy beforehand. He doesn't believe that herbs are good for detoxing, that juice fasting is any good.......so I'm a little leary about his opinion on fasting on water only.

What is your opinion on this?
Thanks Barb

Dear Barb,
Interesting that you wrote about fasting because I was thinking about fasting on water only to cure my Acid Reflux
condition.
I have always read that fasting cleanses and heals the body. I am anxious to hear what Dr. Stoll thinks about this.
Do you have any particular ailment you are trying to cure with a fast ? I'm not sure you mentioned it in your letter to Dr. Stoll.
sincerely, Nadine

Hi Barb,

You mean like David Blaine is doing here at the moment? LOL.

Hi All,
I'm going to give my 2 cents, and I don't think it will be well recieved, but here goes.
I don't believe that any fasting "cleanses" the body. The body is built to EAT and DRINK...it has it's own systems to purge and cleanse. I think eating a healthy diet and drinking water should be enough to keep things cleansed AND running optimal. Your body needs vitamins and minerals, and I don't see how starving it of those is helpful.
I never understood the whole "Cleansing" thing.

Michele,
Have you ever researched or read material on fasting? You should do that first before you give an opinion. Fasting is wonderful for cleansing the body. Joel's book is excellent (along with many others) explaining what happens when the body no longer has to digest food. It starts working on cleansing and healing all kinds of ailments. I personally have done several "water only" fasts. After each one, I get stronger and stronger. It has been years since I have been sick. About the only issues I have left to deal with are skin issues and they are almost gone! The important thing to remember is to eat healthy before the fast and after (whole foods only). Sometimes I like to just juice and eat raw veggies on the day prior. Be careful coming off a water only fast as the tendency to pig out on anything you see is high since food tastes incredible afterwards. Be sure to let us know how it goes!

Hi Nadine,
I do veggie juice fasting frequently to detox and it helps my digestive system. I have never done a water/only fast. My mom sent me the book to read. Just wanted some feedback on it.

Hi, Barb.

See the fasting archives.

My only hesitancy about water fasting, which I consider a very healthy thing to do, is that it should only be done by someone with a lot of experience. Fresh vegetable juicing is a lot easier to do and works well enough for detox.

Either way, one should read a good fasting booklet first.

For those who have not studied this at all: There is a world of difference between starvation and a water fast!

Hope this helps.

Walt

I actually have researched it and couldn't find anything that really was "in stone" that it was beneficial. Some people report loving it, some people report not - so I just never got into it.
I would like to read the book though that you stated... I am very open to learning.
I voice my opinions but am VERY OPEN to learning and expanding my views! thank you!
