Dr. Stoll - Lugol's

Posted by Sapphire [543.4205] on May 05, 2008 at 02:05:29:

Hi Dr. Stoll,

In the post below, you mention that Lugol's is only available by prescription. I just ordered some off the internet... is it not the real thing? Was I ripped off?

Thank you,

Sapphire

I bought it from this company (link below) and the label says "Risingsun Health's Lugol's 2.2% Iodine"

I wonder why a prescription is needed when it's just iodine, which can be bought OTC?

This is my "impression" from having read up on this a little bit.

In regards to a prescription... the Iodine which you buy OTC is not
certified for human oral consumption. I'm guessing this is like the
hydrogen peroxide you buy OTC also isn't "food grade."

In addition, classic Lugols is stronger than the 2% Iodine you may find
OTC, it should be a 5% solution.

Finally (and this isn't related to the prescription question), because
Iodine is now restricted under law (this is because it is a key
ingredient used to make methamphetamine), you may have difficulty
even finding Iodine. In fact, I had to special order some through my
pharmacist just to do the skin test. It isn't stocked anymore, and it is
regulated to a certain degree, even at the 2% level.

The maximum quantity that may be sold under the current law of the
5% solution is 1 fluid ounce! I'm not familiar with the limitations on
the 2%.

Anywho, looks like we'll both be experimenting with this remedy
soon, as I just ordered some myself - the product fit for oral
consumption - from another distributor, one that does sell the 5% in
very limited amounts (of course).

Thanks, Eric.

Best explanation I have heard yet.

Thanks, Eric,

Very helpful info... here's more I found on Wikipedia:

"In the United States of America, Lugol's solution was previously unregulated and available over the counter as a general reagent, an antiseptic, a preservative,[5] or as a medicament for human or veterinary application. However, effective August 1, 2007, the DEA now regulates Lugol's solution (and, in fact, all iodine solutions containing greater than 2.2% iodine) as a List I precursor because it may potentially be used in the illicit production of methamphetamine.[6] By contrast, Lugol's iodine solution is available over the counter in Canada and Mexico, for example."

We'll have to compare notes on the benefits of Lugol's.
