I was surprised to find that statistics say that every 7th person today is suffering from subclinical hypothyroidism but the medical community considers it normal. Symptoms are extremely similar to candidiasis and leaky gut syndrome so it would be wise for anybody having those symptoms to check their thyroid values.
Here is a very useful link (cached since the original page is gone) : http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:www.alternativemedicine.com/digest/issue22/22003R00.shtml+underactive+thyroid&hl=en
It looks like I have subclinical (perhaps) hypothyroidism. My current TSH value is 8.1 which is way above normal. I haven't tested my current T3/T4 but 6 months ago those were borderline but still within the normal range. It looks like all my symptoms: CFS, constipation, dry skin etc. can be explained by hypothyroidism.
But how does one explain such a high TSH and normal T3/T4? Perhaps their "normal" ranges for those hormones are too broad?
As far as treatment goes I have heard that L-Tyrosine and natural iodine can be used to jumpstart the thyroid. Does anybody know if this could be true or of any other natural treatment short of taking synthetic hormone?
Thank you!

You may also want to take a look at mercury from dentla amalgams as a cause of low thyroid, fungus etc.

SR is very effective in treating low thyroid function. A whole foods diet with no sugar helps, too. Chinese medicine believes that thyroid problems start with the liver, so being kind to your liver is the place to start.

Davy,
How does one look into mercury from dental amalgams as a cause of low thyroid?

I just posted above regarding thyroid function and the benefits of L-Tyrosine. I hadn't read your post until after I did so. I'm curious too about L-Tyrosine. The one thing I've heard about amino acid supplementation is that it's not a good idea to stay on single aminos for an extended period of time and that you should do time offs and supplement with a complete amino acid formula but I don't know whether that is during the time of supplementing with the single amino or during the breaks. I do know that amino acids should be taken on an empty stomach and/or most certainly away from protein intake. Amino acids confuse me and I hear conflicting info on when it's best to take them as in the am pm or what have you. And I've heard that it's good to take them with a carbo snack to avoid stomach upset.

Hey JJs,
I'm no expert, am dealing with these issues myself, started with weird symptons ( lgs, chronic fatigue, low immune, ebv, low temp--thyroid?, candida etc) . Worked the wellness issues real hard with some relief but still not enough resolution. Stumbled across mercury/amalgam info--Bad Stuff for some people. Like so many things we are all impacted differently; hey, 1 out of a thousand is allergic to strawberries, they are great for the other 999 who don't understand or don't believe the 1 poor sick SOB from strawberries person.
Anyway. Find a holstic/alternative doc and a biological dentist. Doc can give you a heavy metal toxicity test, basically DMSA or DMPS (some folks have reaction to this) that stirs the bad stuff up, then you collect urine for 24 hours and they test it to see if heavy metals are in your system. Biological dentist can do various electrical current tests on your amalgams to see if they are susceptible to leakage.
They both can/should discuss symptoms which are vague but make sense to a good doc or biological dentist. Don't bother to see a regular doc or dentist, the will just want to drug you and committ you to a whacky farm as there is no way They Say for amalgams to leak mercury.. NOT!! More and more research points to problems with amalgams...hey tobacco is safe we were told for many years all the time there was a big coverup.
Put biological dentist or mercury amalgam symptons in your search engine or do a search on mercury on this site.
Ultimately mercury can be not an issue, a major issue or just one of many issues,
I'm waiting to hear results from my test but have been told to schedule amalgam removal, so we will see. In the mean time I continue to practice wellness as discussed by Dr. Stoll and company. Hey I trust this opinion, the only one with no agenda. Cover all the bases.
Regards,
Davey
