swollen lymph nodes connected to bracing?

Posted by dani on November 15, 1999 at 08:07:30:

I'm sorry--but I have read soo much of your site and until now i hadn't read archives about swollen lymph nodes. i hadn't realized there was a connection between bracing, allergy, tmj, and swollen lymph nodes. could you maybe send me a link to an explanation of why this is so? my health was doing really, really well but i am going through some emotional trauma right now; my muscle pain is returning and i caught a nasty cold (i haven't caught a cold in months.. a long time for me!) and now my glands feel swollen. other sources i read say that i should go to a doctor if my glands are swollen but is this really a common symptom related to the muscle bracing?

thank you so much,
dani

Hi, Dani.

You really need to have a pretty good working knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the head and neck to understand this & I have discussed it a few times. Of course, there are a LOT of these things buried in the 15,000+ notes on the BB which problem we are working to resolve.

I will briefly go through it again and hope that, if you still have questions, you will write again knowing that, if YOU have them, so must many others.

First, chronic bracing almost inevitably eventually produces the habit of letting the teeth touch while you are relaxed. This causes a reflex action of blockage of the return flow of blood and lymph through the pterygoid plexus (Reference: Monograph by Upjohn Pharmaceuticals [Dr Meyer] in 1967). This causes a back pressure that would enlarge lymph nodes simply from that pressure.

In addition, the swelling in the sinuses and nasal passages from this same backpressure greatly reduces the ability of the upper respiratory tract to cleanse itself of bacteria, viruses and allergens. This leaves the protection of the area up to the lymphatic system and, in order to gain the extra reserves necessary for the extra work, frequently the nodes need to grow larger.

ALL of the mouth and teeth are part of this system so the nodes have more work to do to handle the bacteria that grow in the gingival sulci as well.

Finally, the chronic bracing that causes THIS is also the most common cause of LGS and so there is a lot more challenge to the entire immunological system (70% of the entire lymph system surrounds the gut and LGS really stresses that). Nodes automatically enlarge when the system is pushed.

I hope this helps.

Walt
