Doubt that most docs are idiots? Review your medical records. . .

Posted by Sandy on October 29, 2002 at 01:31:28:

Hi,
Just received the requested copies of my ER visits of a few years ago.

Well, let's see, where to begin. . . First of all, though I was A VIRGIN the idiots took a vaginal swab when I complained of pelvic pain and did tests for chlamydia and gonorrhea. Did anyone ever ask me about my sexual status? No.

At another visit for other problems, labs were drawn and a serum pregnancy test was done. !! Again, I was a VIRGIN, and nobody asked me any questions about my possibly being pregnant.

At the visits in which I complained of a sore throat I had obvious thrush, with the white stuff clearly visible. Each time a throat culture for Strep was done!! Any good doc worth his salt will recognize the characteristic strawberry-red appearance of strep throat (which of course I did not have). . oh yeah, I forgot for a second that doctors have lost the fine art of physical examination.

For my pain complaints I was told to take . . . Tylenol. I have that at home, so why did I bother going to the hospital for relief of my pain? I could've stayed home and taken the damned Tylenol on my own.

Basically this confirms what I've known for too long. Docs don't ask enough of the right questions, don't spend enough time examining patients, and jump to ridiculous conclusions.

So, these are just my records. How much do you think this costs us as a nation in unnecessary lab tests (like pregnany tests on a virgin?)??????

Once upon the 1970s, I had on going pelvic pain. One visit to the GP, and 4 specialists later.....no diagnosis and continuing pain.

In the ER, still in my clothing, flat out on the table, I was poked and prodded on the belly and informed promptly that I had gonorrhea, by a man in white who did NOT have a grasp on communication in English. I argued to no avail. One big needle of Pennicillin in the butt later, and I was on my way home.........with continuing pelvic pain. The bill was just over 100.00. MEGA Bucks in those days!

It just so happened that my next door neighbor, a Chiropractor, upon hearing the tale, invited me for an office visit. An xray revealed GAS POCKETS! She told me to change my diet and drink more water. Pain ended. Problem solved. We still laugh over that one!

It took me two years to pay off those medical bills.....no insurance. What ever went so wrong, and what made made me think the GP and four specialists would find and fix the problem? Must have been a matter of trust. LOL!

You paid those bills??? For wrongful practice of medicine??? I wouldn't have. I would've complained and written to a newspaper about those quacks.

Have you complained and made this public (aside from posting here)? If people continue taking it up their ... quietly, nothing will change.

Know what would happen if you named the hospital or the docs in your letter (had it been printed) to the editor? You would be sued for libel.

And just what "public" forum am I to go to to reveal my sexual history (and other private medical information) to the world? Can't sue for malpractice -- no physical harm was done to my person.

No, not suing. I meant complaining to the doctors' superiors and publishing in a newspaper anonymously. With your face shaded (you've probably seen this done to other people).

For telling the story as it happened? I don't think so. They might have threatened, but I am sure they wouldn't have proceeded with that because there's no crime in describing facts.

Right. Some TV show is going to air a story about someone complaining about their medical care who wasn't mutilated or killed by a doc. Not gonna happen. Only sensational stories make headlines -- if someone dies due to medical care their relatives could pursue it. The docs would argue that they were being careful, covering all the bases, by ordering the tests. Plus another M.D. would have to be consulted to criticize the doc's work, and that would not happen either.

Thanks, Sandy.

Perhaps the internet will save us from all this. All it takes is eliminating the monopoly. Public education about what is going on is the only way I know to do that.

Namaste`

Walt
