Hi,
My nephew is 6 years old and has very large tonsils..he's having occasional periods of sleep apnea because of it and noisy sleeping. His doctor looked at them and repeatedly said they were really large looking. So, the doctor is putting him on a steroid, prednisone, and an antibiotic (The doctor could also feel lymph nodes on his neck). She said the meds should shrink the tonsils 95% of the time.
CAn somebody tell me if this sounds right to put him on all these meds? Any advice?

Hi. I'm sorry that your little one is having such problems with his tonsils. I am not a doctor but I would suggest talking to your PED about having his tonsils taken out. My brother had his taken out at around 6 yrs. old and my 3 year old nephew is having his removed soon also. Try the meds. If they dont work or if your little one keeps getting enlarged tonsils and/or throat infections often then maybe considder having a talk about removing the tonsils. Your little one would feel so much better once they are gone forever and never there to swell again. The procedure is usually done in Out Patient surgery and doesnt last that long. Maybe a 45 minute procedure. It would be a hard and sore week or so for him afterwards but then he would not ever have to suffer like this again.
I hope your little one starts feeling better soon.
Sally~

Grace,
ALLERGIES, ALLERGIES, ALLERGIES! Milk is #1 and wheat is #2. The combination of dairy and wheat is #3. See the archives for how to test for this at home for free.
Even his doc knows this (That is why the prednisone!) In MY opinion, it should be considered malpractice to treat this kid with cortisone for this.

This is exactly what I thought too. So I was thinking what good is the prednisone really going to do if the allergen isn't eliminated (besides keeping the inflammation from causing damage- short-term maybe o.k.) but won't it come back? What good will the antibiotics do if it's an allergy (probably let's prescribe it just in case it's not an allergy or a virus?)?

there's other meds for allergies that could be prescibed (or NOT prescribed since you can buy benedryl just about anywhere)that might be better to give a kid.
But of course it could be handled without the meds at all too if you can figure out what the allergen is.

Hi Grace,
My bf's kids have had sore throats (I don't know how enlarged their tonsils might have been or not have been)but the Dr. looks says he doesn't see any signs of infection it's probably allergies and he's never once prescribed anti-biotics or cortisone for them when he opines that it's allergies.
He has prescribed allery meds though, he has said benedryl would be just as good if we wanted to get that, but never cortisone.
Prednisone isn't prescribed for underlying conditions anyway it's for inflammation.

Thanks Dr. Stoll,
I was thinking that it was medicine overload for such a young kid. I'm going to pass this info to my cousin (my nephew's mom). And guess what? He DOES have a milk allergy!!! Since he was born!

I'll have to write Dr. Stoll directly about this, but I forgot.. even though he does have a milk allergy, his parents are really good about not letting him eat ANYthing with milk in it. So, why still the enlarged tonsils? Maybe he's allergic to something else and they don't know about it? hmmmm...

He might be allergic to something else Grace. The point of my other post (about my bf's kids' doctor)was mostly that if my bf's kids' dr can look at their throat and tell the difference between a probable infection and a probable allergy don't you think this doctor should be able to as well?

You'd think that all doctors would be educated similarly enough to be able to distinguish the same things... but in this case, how can they really tell.. based on the appearance of the tonsils?

based on the appearance of the tonsils
apparently. Why else would the doctor say he "doesn't see signs of infection"?
It seems to me that prescribing antibiotics AND prednisone is like covering all the bases and saying, I don't know what it is, let's drug him up and it should help, and it probably would but how are we supposed to know which drug helped when they are prescribed for different things?
Why don't we just assume it's an allergy, give him benadryl (not prednisone) and see if it helps. Then if it doesn't give the antibiotics and see if it helps. cultures could be done to see if it's bacterial infection too, but the antibiotics will work for that and only that.
