Matt,
Years ago the FDA even said that "cold medicines" were not effective for ADULTS! However there is so much money to be made in the market that that conclusion was effectively squelched very quickly.
A prediction: within a few years the FDA will come out with "ALL CHILDREN". They are already suggesting children under 6. Next will be children under 12 and finally all "cold medicines are ineffective for everybody". This gradual progression will soften the blow to Big Pharma--which is the true major function of the FDA, in my opinion.
