What can you tell me about this? My daughter has a friend that has a baby that was just diagnosed with this parasite. He is only presenting with loose stools. My daughter is 15 weeks pregnant and has a son who is 18 months old and they were planning to visit her friend . She is apprehensive about going at this time. What are the risks of transmitting this infection . Any information will be grately appreciated.
Thank You.

Dear Barbara,
Blastocystis Hominis is just about the mildest parasite one can get. I would take its presence as a proof that LGS is present already in someone this young & do something about THAT before worse things happen----which they certainly will.
ONLY those people (and babies) with a less than healthy colonic bacterial population (dysbiosis) can get something like this so, if the visiting baby is really healthy, it cannot "catch" this organism.
The only perfect way to protect the visitor would be to learn how to get the baby's GI tract perfectly normal first.
Of course, immunity is not the ONLY factor, the environmental concentration of pathological organism also plays a minor part (less important than the immunity). SO, some one with just a borderline healthy bacterial population COULD have that overwhelmed by a very high concentration of this organism in the environment. It is like a "dance".
I hope this is answering your question. It is a good one and, once again, points up why it is so important for the public to understand the relationship between immunity & invading organisms.
Walt
