Question about people living with parasites in the third world

Posted by Melissa on April 23, 2003 at 13:43:35:

Okay, so I have heard endless stories about people going to third world countries and picking up bugs. I know the story well because it happened to me. While I know becoming infected said a lot about my immune condition at the time, it still leaves this question perpetually unanswered in my mind:

How do people live with parasites in the third world? Do they build up an immunity? Do they ignore the symptoms?

Thanks to anyone with information on this...
M.

Hi, Melissa.

You know, the Smallpox virus is really a parasite. Remember what happened to the Native Americans when the European explorers came to visit?

Hope this helpe.

Walt

The same thing that happened to the Europeans?

Okay, what about the huge percentage of intestinal parasite infection in people living in carribean countries? How do they live with these parasites?

In some places they are well aware of the parasites and take various herb remedies to 'wash out' their systems on a regular basis.

Hi, Melissa.

Perspective. Only one out of ten of our cells are human. The other nine are either parasitic, fungal, bacterial, etc.

Even our human cells are not totally human. The mitochondria are not human. They are symbiotic organelles with their own genetic (non-human) inheritance.

We are really a committee of organisms going around being directed by our human component.

Now, what was it you were saying?

Walt

Thanks for spelling this out. It really bugs me to hear people describe the "third world" like some sort of sordid existance when the real health problems dwell in the "first world."

btw, I got curious after hearing you comment on the root word for holy and health, so I looked up Webster's collegiate dictionary. Here is what I found:

The word "heal," "health," "holy," and "whole" all share the same Old English root of "hal," which perhaps means "whole."

I don't want to read too much into this, but the connections seem obvious: eating whole foods, we'll heal and gain health, and therefore become whole, and as a result become aware of the whole-ness in everything and eventually we become holy.
