Dear Dr. Stoll,
and Dr. Steven Rochlitz too please, if you're reading this, and anyone else who can help...
Thank you for offering this invaluable service. I've been personally researching and tracking down my own health issues for a couple of years now and am so thrilled to find someone/a website specifically geared to help me do that. I respect the need for me to read through the archives on my own and hope that I have done that suitably before posting this. However, my thinking skills are so affected by this condition that I'm not able to be as systematic about that as I would like, and I'm desperate for some hand-holding, so I hope you can oblige...
First here's some background, then I'll get to my specific questions:
I've recently had an intestinal permeability test done by Smoky Mountains Diagnostic Lab that confirms I have Leaky Gut. I have a Lactulose/Mannitol Ratio of .05, putting me well into the permeable range. (Lactulose recovery was .81%, just outside of normal, and Mannitol recovery was 17%, well within normal, but the ratio was the kicker.)
I've also had a GI panel done by DiagnosTechs which revealed:
No yeast isolated
Ameba Histolytica detected
Total Intestinal SIgA <67 (Wow... it says <400 is low)
Chymotrypsin (Stool) 4 (Low is 4-9, Abnomally low is <4)
Everything else was normal/negative
I began suspecting leaky gut and candida overgrowth last May (9 months ago), and my doctor obliged by putting me on a leaky gut and anti-candida protocol, though he did not run any tests at that time. After some initial great progress (which I attribute to the Candida being destroyed) some things began to get worse, digestively and neurologically. For a long time I couldn't figure out if what I was experiencing was Candida die-off or allergic reaction, but I've finally nailed it down...
My symtoms have been right down the line with what I've read about in Steven Rochlitz's book, Allergies and Candida (which I found through reading an article from your site - thanks) (Dr. Rochlitz's website, wellatlast.com, has been a tremendous help, offering insight I'd not found elsewhere.) I've had episodes of, hypoglycemia -- to the point of some stroke-like episodes, low blood pressure (90/40 and probably lower), and a "neurological limpness" that was really scary/felt like what MS would feel like. I had been rotating foods for several months to no avail, but all these episodes finally died down when I stopped all supplements. Sure enough, I just read in Dr. Rochlitz's book that supplements can be more allergenic than foods and need to be rotated or stopped or at least carefully rotated at least until leaky gut is healed. So... I finally know that all of that stuff was allergic reaction, and I've tracked down through trial and error that these reactions occur any time I eat just about any food or supplement for more than 2 or three days in a row.
Two other issues I've dealt with are 1)An intoxicated/enebriated feeling... absolutely aweful... (I'm assuming from acytaldehyde ?), and 2)a very slow, wierd digestion. Both of these have greatly improved with taking Betaine HCL w/Pepsin, but I feel I'm just keeping these issues at bay.
QUESTIONS:
(I've found a holistic-minded MD who is very open-minded and willing to "go with me" with stuff I'm researching, but he doesn't have an in-depth knowledge of all of this himself, so I'd like to arm myself with some suggestions from you at my next visit to discuss my lab results.)
1) Do I understand correctly that I should not attempt to kill the amoeba and heal the leaky gut at the same time... and that I should address the amoeba first?
2) What should I take to kill amoeba histolytica? Dr. Rochlitz says the only drug that can kill amoeba histolytica cysts is Yodoxin. I am interested in a natural means of killing it (such as Artemesia Absinthum) but I would assume that the drug would have the advantage of circulating throughout my bloodstream and killing it throughout my body versus the natural remedies only being able to deal with it mainly in my gut (and whatever leaks out :) Is that the case?
2) Do you know if Yodoxin crosses the blood/brain barrier? I'd like the idea of taking something that does, because I've had such noticeable mental/neurological reactions and visual issues that it makes me wonder sometimes if amoeba has colonized in my brain.
3) Also, Dr. Rochlitz mentioned several other natural remedies for parasites, but I'm not sure if all of them are effective at killing amoeba cysts. Could you provide me a list of natural remedies that are effective at killing amoeba cysts? Are there any natural remedies that would circulate throughout my bloodstream or even cross the blood/brain barrier?
4)HERE'S A BIG QUESTION: How can I navigate my allergic reactions and still be effective at killing the amoeba? I.E., Given that I have quite severe reactions after ingesting just about anything for more than 2-3 days, how can I go about taking something consistently to kill the amoeba? I understand that Yodoxin takes 20 days of daily use to be effective. (?) Would you recommend I try a go of it to just see, or would that likely sensitize my system so that it would be harder to use even rotationally? ANOTHER BIG QUESTION: If I took it rotationally, just once every 4-5 days, would that hit the amoeba too softly and give opportunity for it to become resistant to the drug? Another related idea is to rotate several different natural and/or drug remedies, but the same questions applies.
5) How do I know when I've killed off all of the amoeba? (...or a sufficient amount to begin treating the Leaky Gut?) The lab test didn't show an indication of how much was present, just that it was detected.
6) From the lab data I shared do you think I've nailed amoeba and leaky gut as "the biggies" to tackle, or is there likely some bigger or other issue I'm missing? For example I've read on this BB things like "better catch this now before Chron's develops..." Do I need to check for some big thing like that that has maybe developed as a result of this? If so, what "big things" would be likely to develop from my track of ills?
By the way, about the allergic issue...I know Dr. Rochlitz teaches in his book about how to self-test to see which remedies would cause reaction. I'm really looking forward to reading that, but 1)my trial and error experience over the past several months makes me feel it would be very unlikely to find ANY supplement or drug that wouldn't make me react after continuous use, and 2)I've put off my Dr's appointment for two weeks already trying to buy time to finish the book and get more insight for myself first but I'm floundering to finish it -- for various reasons not at all due to lack of interest, and I've reached a point where I feel a need to just go to my doctor with the knowledge I have so far and get started with something and then correct in course as I become more educated... but I'm hoping for some answers to these questions as a starting point.
Many, many thanks!

I've personally went throught this myself. You first want to "Be Sure" that your bowels are moving before taking drugs to eradicate the Amoeba. This means you need to be experiencing 2 to 3 bowel movements everyday. Corrective-A or Fiberblend are two colon cleansing supplements that can help accomplish this.
To eradicate the amoeba, you need to take the prescription drug "Flagyl" 150 mg. Be warned that this drug will possibly cause you to fall to the floor and you will think that you are dieing for around 30 minutes or so. This is a "Good Thing" because it's simply a die-off reaction, which is indicating that you are indeed infected with amoeba. Drinking lots of spring water will help to eleviate the die-off reaction as well as keeping your bowels moving, which will help get the dead Emoeba out of your body quicker.
Also be warned that taking the Flagyl will increase/create a severe Candida Albican problem, which you must deal with next but it's the only sure way to eradicate the amoeba. Take one Flagyl tablet for "Only" three days (mon. Tues. and Wed.) in a row of each week and continue this for a period of three weeks or until no more die-off symptoms are experienced but do not take the flagyl for more than one month.
After a month of taking the Flagyl, you can start healing your leaky gut problem. This is accomplished by going on an elimination diet and taking supplements like Carlson's lemon flavored Cod Liver Oil, Permavite and drinking fresh cabbage juice.
You more than likely also have a congested liver and gallbladder problem, like 75% of the population is experiencing so you need to go down the list of congested liver symptoms that are below and see how many of them you are experiencing. If the number is over 10, then you should consider performing a simple liver flush! Old Sage doctors believed that when a patient was seriously sick, regardless if they were experiencing signs of cancer, heart disease, an autoimmune disease, etc., that the “Root Cause” was a congested or blocked Liver and Gallbladder, which occurred three to five years before the onset of their illness. By performing a simple Liver/Gallbladder flush, until all the stones are eliminated, this health problem can be reversed!

Congratulations, On.....
Listen to SHAPE.
You already know a lot more than 95% of the gastroenterologists in this country.
In order:
1. Amoeba Histolytica is a bad organism. Unfortunately, until the LGS is resolved you would likely just get it back, That is not, however, a reason not to kick it in the head once and a while.
2. The actual organism does not have to cross the barrier for it to affect your brain chemistry. See "The Second Brain" by Gershon. Most of this stuff is done with the molecular waste products of the infestation. Yodoxin is NOT the only prescription effective against AH. If this were me, I would be giving it a try.
3. Ibid.
4. One of the problems with the LGS/parasite conundrum! The solution to this problem is that it is a long term process in unraveling. The more you understand the better able you will be to make the right choice at the right time. You are already far ahead of the curve but that knowledge will not shorten the road ahead---only make it more certain that you will eventually get to the destination you are seeking.
5. Not easy. It will take at least 5 negative tests (at a good lab like GSDL) to be pretty sure. Most of the symptoms from AH are from the physical damage it does to your intentinal lining and thus your LGS.
6. Yep.
How are you doing with your SR?

To Dr. Stoll and to SHAPE,
I cannot say THANK YOU enough for being here! I have been digging through piles of reasearch and leading my doctor by the hand "single-handedly" for a long time and wishing there was someone who could lead ME by the hand. I could just cry tears of joy that there is someone/MORE than one person out there with the knowledge and concern for others to do just that. I hope I'm not too gushy, but THANK YOU! Thank you also Dr. Stoll for affirming me in my knowledge of this. This has been such an uphill treck met with skepticism from so many, even from my helpful holistic doctor, that it is a huge blessing to get some validation like that. Anyway...
I'm new to BBs and not sure how the response strings work. I have a couple of questions geared to Dr. Stoll's thoughts then the rest geared to SHAPE's thoughts, but I'm hoping you'll BOTH see and read it all if you would please.
Questions geared to Dr. Stoll's thoughts:
1) I didn't quite follow you... You DO think I should check/test to see if these issues (amoeba/LGS) have lead to other problems? If so, what should I check for? (i.e., Colon cancer or other scary stuff?)
2) Related to #1, I forgot to mention that my GI panel did detect occult blood. Is that scary (colon cancer kind of scary, etc.) or is that a common occurence with LGS?
3) You asked how I am doing with my SR. I've not gotten into it at all yet but not due to lack of interest. I've been so overwhelmed with seeking out the specifics to deal with my immediate issues that I've had that on the back burner. I've spent most of my time in the LGS archives and have not run into the specifics of it as much as is found elsewhere on your website. I would love to learn more, but am inclined to tackle these first steps I'm discussing below to get those aspects healing underway then add that in as I have a chance to absorb it. Does that sound like a good plan?
Questions geared to SHAPE's thoughts:
1) I'm foggy on the timing/time-frame of taking Flagyl and healing LGS. You say not to take Flagyl for >1Mo, which I understand as it can cause liver damage(?). But what if it's not erradicated after 1 month? Is this just a matter of waiting for awhile to give your liver a rest then doing another run of Flagyl? Also, Dr. Stoll mentioned that it's really hard to get rid of amoeba until the LGS is healed, so... Is this the picture?...
I do a month's run of Flagyl to beat the amoeba back enough to have breathing room to tackle the LGS, As I get LGS treatments underway I stop the Flagyl to give my liver a rest. While I'm treating the LGS (for perhaps a long time) I periodically do additional runs of Flagyl to keep the amoeba beaten back. When LGS is finally healed I'm then just focusing on beating on the amoeba until it's gone (but still needing to do it intermittantly with runs of /rests from Flagyl. Am I correct?
2) I'm confused: Flagyl will increase Candida? I thought Flagyl was an antifungal. Can you explain? I trust your advice, but I'd like to understand as much about this as possible, because... my test results indicate no Candida at this time, but I suspect that's because I beat it back with much effort. Last summer I was at a point where any little pro-candida thing made me just go limp, almost paralyzed I feel certain from the acetaldehyde. It made me almost non-functional. I don't know if I could handle that (I have 2 small children and need to function). What about Yodoxin instead of Flagyl? Would it perhaps not have the pro-candida effect? Any other thoughts/ideas on this?
3) Regarding the need to stop after a month, are there some more gentle naturals I could continue to take after stopping Flagyl to help keep the amoeba beaten down? (I'd appreciate if you could share several as I assume I'll need to rotate them 4-5 days to avoid allergic reaction).
4) Moving on to LGS healing... Are there some LGS healers that I should avoid because they would feed the amoeba? Here are some LGS healers I've dug up in research and would appreciate feedback as to whether they'd be good or contraindicated:
L-Glutamine
NAG
DGL
GLA
Magnesium Ascorbate
Vitamin A
Aloe Vera juice (non-superconcentrated)
5) Regarding an elimination diet for LGS, I think I may be ahead of the game on that one. Due to the allergy issue I've been rotating foods for months. Now due to recent readings and confirmation by my experience I've been avoiding meats and all grains but rice. This is what I'm eating/taking:
Distilled water - every day throughout day
rice or rice/millet bread with olive oil- every day as desired at meals
various vegetables & limited fruits - on 4-5 day rotation at meals
Fiber Flow capsules - every meal
Betaine HCL capsules - every meal
Pancreatin tablets - when I occasionally throw in a meat
Does this sound good to continue for my LGS healing?
6) About the liver flush, two things: a)I did a liver flush back in November. For 1 week I fasted with the exception of a rice protein powder and some liver cleansing supplements. Is that what you're talking about? Would I likely need to do that again any time soon? b)I'm please to say that I am only CURRENTLY experiencing about 7 of the symptoms from the "liver-check" list. However, that's only due to recent developments...
Here's an aside to fill in some gaps on my health picture... Ever since discovering a few weeks ago that supplements were the cause of some of my severe allergic reactions, I've stopped just about all of them except on an occasional/rotational basis. With that as well as my strict diet, I'm amazed at how well I'm doing on most fronts. I'm not having much of an issue with fatigue, which says tons as I had a severe (stage 7) case of adrenal exhaustion a couple of years ago. My moniker, "OnAHealthQuest" aptly describes a quest I began back then that has peeled back onion layer after onion layer of issues down to this one. I'm also doing very well in the emotional/depression arena, which I've had issues with in the past, and I'm not taking any supplements or drugs for it. I feel I'm on the brink of feeling better than I ever have if I can just get this package of issues resolved. When acetaldehyde gets going in my system or I forget to take my Fiber Flow and Betaine, etc., I'm a basket case, but when I'm keeping that at bay, I get glimpses of bright light at the end of the tunnel I haven't seen for years.
Anyway, that aside aside, I do have stuff from the list like blurry vision (a concern to me) and cold hands and feet. I'm thinking maybe I can put a liver flush on the back burner for now but that I might want to keep an eye on that issue as I proceed. Agree?
7) Speaking of liver... does my doctor need to do anything to monitor my liver condition as I take the Flagyl and/or as I'm healing LGS? If so, what/how often?
8) I've read enough to make me paranoid about the idea of larger parasites in my bowels (despite negative results on the GI panel). I had a friend once who did an overnight parasite cleanse that was quite interesting (!!), but I don't have the "recipe" for it. I'm interested in doing one just to get my paranoia over with. Would you say that's a good idea or that that kind of recipe would be contraindicated for my gut at this point in my process? Do you know of a good "recipe" for an overnight get-it-over-with-quickly cleanse? (maybe on this BB?).
9) One last quikie... I've read a lot about Candida producing acetaldehyde but not about amoeba producing it, but I sure get a pickled feeling at times that suggests an alcohol waste product is at work. Does amoeba produce acetaldehyde?
I hope I've not been too lengthy. I will sure appreciate all the feedback you give. Once again, thank you for being there!
Sincerely,
OnAHealthQuest

Thanks, On.
In order of your questions:
1. IF you want to know how many and what kind of parasites you have, that is what you will have to do. Since the average US citizen has 5 major parasites, found by well trained laboratories, I see no special reason for you to spend a lot of money at this time. Perhaps after you have the LGS under control?
2. Not uncommon with LGS; common with parasitosis (clinically significant)and not safe to ignore without a colonoscopy.
3. SR is the single most important thing for anyone to do who has LGS and that is the place to start. In my professional experience, no one who has clinically significant parasitosis does not have LGS.
Hope this helps.

Dear Dr. Stoll,
Thanks. This continues to be very helpful.
1) If there's a chance I have larger critters in my bowels I just want to get them out asap! This is awful and embarrasing to say, but sometimes I feel movements in my bowels that are either my bowels spasming or something else (!). I can't bear the idea of waiting around until LGS is dealt with this issue(unless I have to). a)Is it OK to go ahead and try to erradicate all parasites before my leaky gut is healed? b)If so, what's the best way to do that? c)Can I do a blanket cleanse without being tested for specific critters? A friend of mine did an "overnight colon flush" that flushed out a nest of large critters (ick), and I'm inclined to try such a flush to get rid of whatever non-microsopic stuff might be in there. Three questions: d)Being that it involves vinegar and a lot of fiberous stuff, would that be a bad idea (because of aggravating LGS or feeding candida, etc.)? e)Would it likely just gross me out without truly erradicating the issue or do you think that if it flushes out a bunch of critters that it's likely been successful at getting them all? f)If I take Flagyl or Yodoxin for the amoeba, do those drugs also kill those larger kinds of parasites? If not, is there one that does?
2) Regarding SR, to get started with basic techniques and understanding, do I simply need your book Saving Yourself... or do I need to get The Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook?
3) SHAPE mentioned that before I begin Flagyl I need to be having 2-3 bowel movements/day. Could you give me an idea of how to accomplish this? (I'm at 1-2/day) I.E., Do I just keep taking more and more fiber supplements until I'm there? (I'm already eating mainly vegetables.) Is there a maximum amount of fiber supplements I shouldn't exceed?
4) When I see my doctor tomorrow I'd like to be able to share with him the logic of doing the Flagyl just three days in a row then staying off for four days as SHAPE described. (I trust that it's good advice, but I need to be able to convince my doctor as I cannot write my own Flagyl Rx.) Do you know what that's about?... is it to avoid allergic reaction or to minimize die off?
5) Also, SHAPE said that Flagyl would likely stir up some Candida. Is that true for Yodoxin as well? Which would be your pick -- Flagyl or Yodoxin?
I'm working on getting more succinct with my questions. Thanks for bearing with me.
With much appreciation,
OnAHealthQuest

Thanks, On.
In order of your questions:
1. O.K to treat so long as you are prepared to do it again and again as the LGS is gradually dealt with. Different parasites require different drugs so the side effects can be a problem and the expense daunting. There are herbal mixtures that are frequently helpful in discouraging ALL parasites but you would need to see your local herb shop for that info.
2. You need the workbook.
3. Titrate the fiber with the desired frequency and consistancy of your stools. The worst that can happen is that your stools will become too frequent and loose.
4. All drugs with significant side effects are (and should be) by prescription only. Flagyl certainly fits that catagory.
5. I have had no experience with Flagyl "stirring up candida". If it were me, I would try the Flagyl first and then, if no benefits, try the Yodoxin.
Hope this helps.
