I am a 20 yr old Australian male, who contracted this blastocystis while surfing in indonesia one year ago.I have had extreme difficulty finding help down-under on this Bug. I have been tested by GSDL and undergone treatment for the parasite and candida(which was slight),and have been following an allergy-free diet for 3 months now. I took 400mg tid Flagyl for 14 days and seem to be still experiencing symptoms similar to before(now 2 months from flagyl). Can you recommend a better dosage? Is there a cycle of which I can follow to better eliminate this.I've also tried the herbal anti-parasite approach, to no avail.I appreciate any information anyone may have.
Thankyou.

Hi, Jess.
This relatively harmless, and very common, parasite rarely causes any symptoms. It is extremely difficult to eradicate BECAUSE the real problem is LGS and until THAT is dealt with your gut is more welcoming to pathogenic parasites than it is in the normal germs that used to grow there and keep you healthy.
As you know, Flagyl is EXTREMELY toxic and, alone, rarely will resolve the problem. You will eventually have more problems with the Flagyl than you ever would have had with the Blastocystis. Your symptoms in the beginning, that took you to the doc, were from LGS and not from the parasite. The test you needed from GSCL was a "comprehensive stool analysis" which would, surely have shown you the LGS.
My first suggestion is to read all you can find on the archives about LGS and start doing something about that.

Dear doc,
thank you very much for replying.Yes I did complete a "comprehensive stool analysis" via the lovely people at GSDL,which did not show any mention of Leaky Gut Syndrom.Candida was of minor concern, but I am still following a yeast-free,sugar-free diet to reduce the growth of candida.
Question. In your opinion, was it not the blastocystis that made me violently ill in Indonesia, and is this a common reaction upon contraction,or is there reason to beleive something else got me.
Awaiting your answer.
Thanks mate.

Hi, Jess.
Send copies of your purged stool analysis to my FAX along with the comprehensive stool analysis. The FAX # is (850) 769-1436. I will respond to this note when I have seen that.
