Dr. Stoll,
I received in the mail yesterday from my doctor my results from GSL. It showed that I have a definate yeast problem (no big surprise) and it also showed a high level of Klebsiella oxytoca.
I don't see my doctor for a couple more weeks for my follow-up, but he did write and tell me to continue with my wellness program (SR, exercise, and I'm on the H-G diet now, cutting out all sugar) and to take caprylic acid and lots of acidophilus for the yeast. I had planned on taking grapefruit seed extract; which is better?
He also told me to take uva-ursi and oil of oregano for the Klebsiella (don't know where I got or how long I've had this bacteria, although GSL said it is usually acquired in hospitals). Do you think these products will get rid of it, and how long will it take?
There was alot more in the report from GSL that I don't understand, like elevated vegetable fibers, indicating maldigestion due to hydrochloric acid/pepsin insufficiency, pancreatic enzyme insufficiency or rapid transit time. Also total fecal fats and long chain fatty acids were both elevated, suggesting pancreatic insufficiency, malabsorption or both. Is this something that the wellness program will correct, or does this need to be addressed medically?
They did find sufficient amounts of E. coli, Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria. If this is true, why the overgrowth of candida?
I know these are all questions I should ask my doctor, and I will, but I always like to get a second opinion from you. You've done so much to help me in the last seven months, and I can't tell you how grateful I am for all of your help.
Thanks,
Sara

Hi, Sara.
Thanks for your kind words.
The wellness program will resolve the LGS and that will make it a lot easier to discourage the candida AND klebsiella from setting up housekeeping there. The correct bacteria is but one of the many factors that have to do with pathogen susceptibility in the colon. Of all the parts of any wellness program, for THIS condition, the SR is the most important. See the note (today) about (yeast vs fungal form).
What do you mean when you say that you are cutting out "all sugar"?
In most cases the GSE is more effective than the caprylic acid. However, if it were me, until the LGS is gone, I would consider taking both. Your test results tell me that you would do well taking a good complex of digestive enzymes. When the LGS is gone, you may no longer need them----
depends on your age.

Walt,
Thanks for the information. I didn't know you could take GSE and caprylic acid at the same time. I know it is safe to take GSE for months, but does the same hold true for caprylic acid?
I am currently taking digestive enzymes, but only in the morning when I take my magnesium. Should I take it with meals also? I'm 44.
What I meant when I said I was cutting out all sugar is that I am on the H-G diet, but following the recommendations in Beth Loiselle's book for if you have candida.
Thanks for your help,
Sara

Hi, Sara,
I don't think you can do better than that with your diet.
I have never heard that there was any limit to how long one can take caprylic acid (except for the depth of your purse).
There ARE tests that would determine if taking enzymes with each meal is needed. However, if it were me, I would not change anything else while testing and go for a few months taking the enzymes with each meal and see what your own laboratory tells you (your bodymind). THEN, stop them for a few months & get a good check on whether you really feel better or not.
let us know what you learn. I think everyone in this country should do a therapeutic trial like that every few years after the age of 40.
