sleep walking

Posted by Danelle Blain on March 08, 1999 at 12:58:10:

Help! My five year old son walked out of our house late last night. He doesn't remember getting up, dressing, and leaving the house. He said he thought he was waiting for the bus. His dad (I work third shift) heard him when the dog started barking. Our son was knocking at the door. He was very cold (we live in Michigan) and scared. He doesn't know how long he was outside. I have an appointment with the doctor on Thursday. What can we do and what questions do we need to ask the doctor? We've put chain locks on all the doors for now, but I doubt if we'll get much sleep. I'll probably be calling every hour to make sure everyone is okay.

Thank you,

Danelle

Hi, Danelle.

This is a dangerous condition as you are now quite aware.

The traditional considered cause of this was pinworms and frequently treating them successfully did resolve the condition.

HOWEVER, we now are a lot more sophisticated (at least SOME of us are) about parasites and LGS that always were associated with this but we just didn't know. ALL of this can cause this.

SO, if the pinworm examination & treatment (I would treat even with a negative pinworm test since the labs are not very good at finding them AND the treatment is pretty safe AND only one dose or medication.) does not solve this, I would suggest you become a student of LGS, C-RS, parasitosis and "food triggers" (which are being discussed on this BB every day--Robert MCFerran).

Walt,

Have you ever heard of people acting out their dreams? My daughter & I both occasionally do this. For me it happens usually when I'm having a nightmare about being attacked, and in the dream I'm fighting back. Next thing I know my husband is waking me up, and I find out that I (once again) just punched and kicked the sh-- out of him in my sleep.

I used to do it ALOT, but since I have been on the wellness program (SR, exercise, whole foods diet) it doesn't happen very often, but it still does happen occasionally (maybe twice a month). Is there a name for this kind of sleep disorder? I also have restless leg, but that has improved dramatically (did self-administered mag. injections for quite a few months). Will the SR eventually take care of this, or is something else contributing to this (parasites)? I had testing done by GSDL & they found candida & klebsiella (treated the klebsiella; still treating the candida), but nothing else.

Thanks!
Sara

Hi Sara,

This may not have any relevance to your situation, but....

I used to have a terrible time with restless leg, resulting in many disturbed nights for both Ian and I. SR, liquid magnesium supplements and exercise all helped marginally, but it was really wearing me down.

Since I started the E-diet, the twitching virtually totally disappeared. Since I've also been seeing a cranio-sacral therapist, I wasn't sure it was the E-diet - till I tested basmati rice the last two days, and the leg twitching came back with a vengeance. Needless to say, I've stopped testing rice, and we'll see what tonight brings. (Fingers crossed!!)

I'm not saying the rice is what's doing it for you, just mentioning the possibility that it could be allergy related for you, too.

Regards, Deb.

Deb,

Thanks for your thoughts on this, but I tested out okay to the rice back when I was doing the food testing. Although I eat rice almost every day, there are some days now that I don't eat rice, and I haven't noticed any correlation. But then, the restless leg is almost a thing of the past anyway, and acting out my dreams only happens every couple of weeks (it used to happen 2-3 times a week).

I would LOVE to see a cranio-sacral therapist, but haven't taken the time to try and find one yet. I have heard so many good things about it though.

Hope your food testing is going well!

Sara

I have a 13 year old who has been sleep walking since the age of 4. I know how scary this is for you. It isn't frequent, maybe once every few months. I installed an alarm system in the house the rings in my room if he tries to open a door to go outside, as I was deeply concerned about him walking into the backyard pool in his sleep. If you can't get something like this, you might try putting a very loud bell on his bedroom door, that will ring as he opens it. Or to put up a barrier of some sort, like a baby gate, as he tries to leave his room. Some friends recently took my son to Disney World, and they were astonished to see him walking around the room after falling asleep. They were afraid that he was going to walk out! I am also wary whenever we are away on vacation, and I don't have my alarm system with me. I am hoping that as he reaches adolescence he will stop doing this. In the meantime, I know how scary it is trying to keep them safe!
