My daughter is preparing for pregancy and the OB prescribed a prenatal vitamin that contains 400mcgs of folic acid. Is this enough or should she supplement? I notice that most supplements contain 400mgs.

Hi Wondering,
They didn't prescribe the pre-natal + folic acid?
Yes I think she should take extra folic acid...it was prescribed that way when I was pregnant.

400 mcg is the minimum recommendation for women of child-bearing age (that's all menstruating girls and women, not pregnant women) to reduce the risk of spina-bifida.
at least 600 is usually recommended for pregnant women...and no more than 1000 w/o consulting doctor.

I misread. I thought you said she was already pregnant. Still 400 is the minimum recommendation. Perhaps the OB was planning to increase it after she becomes pregnant, but there's no real reason she shouldn't take more before becoming pregnant but I don't know if it's really a necessity to do so.

Hi, Wondering.
400 mcg is the correct dose for preventing neural tube defects ONLY! This long overdue recognition by the allopathic community is a travesty. How about the preventive properties of the other B vitamins or essential fatty acids?????????? How much longer will the powers that be delay about recommending these perfectly harmless and very effective supplements for brain development and function throughout life? They must also be begun prior to pregnancy for the best effect.

Hi Walt,
To be honest I actually get the impression that they do "recognize" it...as far as making recommendations based on that...well that's something else altogether.
