Bowel Movements and Pregnancy

Posted by TammyV on January 17, 1999 at 10:42:31:

I am 33 weeks pregnant. Prior to becoming pregnant I was diagnosed with GERD and Hiatal hernia. Prior to knowing I was pregnant I was taking GRJ. During this pregnancy I have been told I have a) low blood pressure b) low iron, so I take prenatal vitamins...I have gained 18 pounds (my first two I gained 54 and 45!) My question...I have alternating very soft BM or very hard BM. In the BM is small specks of dark small specks of fine ground coffee grinds.
Is this something that I should be concerned with? Or for that matter is any of this affecting the baby? Thanks

Hi, Tammy.

Go to the drugstore and get a few Hemaccult slide tests for occult blood in the stool. Test several of the little black specks on alternate days. If the tests are negative I cannot think of anything for you to be concerned about. Mention it to your doc at your next appointment and show him/her the test kit results.

Your history says that you have LGS and that is likely what is causing everything you mentioned. It would not hurt you to figure out your dosage of metamucil and mineral oil needed to keep your stools the same for the rest of your pregnancy (see the article about constipation on the homepage).

The GRJ cannot bother your pregnancy or the baby. However, pregnancies are notorious for causing exacerbations of GERD.

Let us know how you do.
