About to go 3rd round with pilonidal cyst...

Hi there,
I just came across your site and it's given me a lot of information - thank you! I am a 31-year old woman and had my first pilonidal surgery in 1987 when I was 17, then another in 1996 just before my 26th bday. After nine years, it was bad enough. But here I am, another five years later, facing this again. I haven't seen my dr. yet, but as anyone who's been through this knows, you KNOW when you have the problem.

I'm just looking for some encouragement here - I am now VERY discouraged by reading the recurrence rates for 2nd and 3rd surgeries. 90% chance of surgery failure for a 3rd procedure? All I keep thinking is that I will have to face this my entire life!!

When I was 17, I was not heavy - I was average for a teenage girl, but in '96 and now, I am much heavier. I keep thinking this is someone's way of punishing me for being heavy (since most of these sites say obesity is a contributing factor).

I was hopeful after the second surgery (the doctors said 'we cut REALLY deep, I doubt it will come back') and I just don't know what to do.

Thank you!

I know how you feel. I have my second surgery scheduled for June 19th. My first surgery was in 98. I'm now 30 years old. My first flare-up was in 91 and my mother and I thought it was just a boil. We soaked it in epson salt to get it to open up and it did after a few painful days.

That was first and last time my cyst has ever opened up. After that in 98 when it came back I had to have it lanced twice before I went into surgery. I had the open procedure the first time. I only had it open for one week after surgery and then the surgeon said to let it close. From all I have learned that just doesn't happen. It takes longer to heal and you have to pack it.

So here I am after a lancing in 2001 and one just this last Feb and I've decided to go for the surgery again. Since my cyst never drains and it becomes a very painful abcess I just can't live with it.

I became educated on this site and another site www.pilonidal.org which is down right now. These two sites have helped me learn what a Pilonidal is and all the things I've been doing wrong. Something my previous doctors never told me.

I now feel that with this surgery and knowing how to care for the cyst after surgery I have the best chance I can for being done with it. It's no 100% nothing from what I've read can give you a 100% chance of no recurrance. But at least with surgery I have a chance? And more important understanding what I can do.

I'm overweight too about 50lb and I've been losing weight slowly. The weight is only a problem because pressure on that area of your body is one of the biggest problems with a Pilonidal. And being heavier just puts more weight on it. So I use a tush cush now everywhere. A tush cush is more comfortable than a donut. You can order one online www.tushcush.com.

I know this doesn't help but you are not alone. I don't know what your cyst is like whether is drains or not. But either way they are a pain in the butt no matter what. I can't tell you if another surgery is the answer only with research and soul searching can you come up with that choice. Just make a decision that you can live with.

Good luck

Hi, Sick.

Listen to just.

Now that you have had so much surgery, your options are greatly limited so far as how to live with it. Still, the same things that would have helped you live with it without any surgery are the things that will help now.

Once you have digested the archives, if you have more questions, we may be able to help.

Yes I did use the hot compresses in Nov when I had a very small flare-up. That with proper cleaning and essential oils the infection went away.

But in Feb it came back and very angry, hot compresses didn't work nothing worked it just grew bigger and more painful so I had to have it lanced.

If hot compresses work and your cyst opens up you do have a chance to live with it. However mine have never opened up except that first time and you just can't live with that kind of pain it has to be lanced. So I always tell people don't live with the pain long if it doesn't open up soon and I mean very soon get it lanced. It is a large infection inside your body that can and has with me twice caused fevers.

We need a PC support group in Denver. Anyone else interested?

I too am a PC sufferer in Denver. I've been living with it for the last year, after a 23 year hiatus. I've only had two lancings, most of the time I can resolve the problem with the hot compresses and/or antibiotics. Luckily, my cyst drains. I have visited one (general) surgeon, but decided this program is not for me, at least not yet.

the oxygen therapy route...ozone or peroxide. peroxide is easier. use the food grade http://cat007.com/o2.htm

also , what does repeated ultraviolet do to the cysts ? anything ?

Thanks, Leon.

Just as with chronic musculoskeletal pain, the injection of 100% gaseous oxygen directly into the area frequently has miraculous effects (RARELY is more than one injection needed.) Since it is 100% oxygen the injection of this gas cannot have any of the dangerous effects of the "bubble in the vein" method of killing someone.

NOW, find a physician who has been trained to do this.
