Pilonidal Cyst

Our 18 year old daughter has been diagnosed with a Pilonidal Cyst with MUCH green discharge. The ER doctor and her pediatrician has referred her to a surgeon. They said that the cyst was too deep to do anything in the ER and they packed it. She is also Type 1 Diabetic. If what I have read with all the many others who have had much problems with this condition healing after surgery, would we be better to opt for antibiotics to clear up the present situation and pray that it does not reoccur? Her rate of healing is slower than before she was diagnosed with diabetes 8 years ago and also she has raised scars when she heals. Her nurse also suggested that she had heard that this situation was caused by a twin that was absorbed by the body while in utero? This seems strange to me and only an old wives tale? Any suggestions or insight on any of these problems? She sees a surgeon tommorrow and has the packing removed.

Hi, Charlotte.

An infected teratoma (the twin) is very similar to an infected pilonidal cyst and only a pathologist could tell under the microscope. The teratoma is easier to cure, surgically, than the PC.

Because of her type 1 diabetes, the odds are changed from what is usually recommended on this BB. A good try with a wide excision surgically is what I would try. Keep your fingers crossed and let us know how she does.

Walt

Also, go to the www.pilonidal.org website to learn about everything you'd want to know about pilonidal cyst situations. Great discussion board, too, with fellow sufferers...
