Pilonidal cyst. Heating pad compress

Posted by Kia on June 04, 2003 at 05:13:38:

Well,After sitting and sitting in warm water 3 times a day for about 4 days and seeing no change at all in my sweeling I tried the compress idea I saw here. I found it got to cool to fast so I thought "How do I keep this thing warm?" And looked over and saw my heating pad. I laid a towel on my bed the wash cloth being wet got the bed wet so I put down a towel!I got the heating pad warm and took off the cover, laid a big wash cloth that had been in hot water over the heating pad and I didn't wear anything no under roo's! I laid on it twice for about 20 minutes each. I think one might have been about 40 minutes. It felt sooooo good I didn't want to get up! HA! Any way,After just 2 of those heating pad compress things,my swelling is 90% gone!!!! I couldn't believe it! A few tips about this though:
#1.I thought putting the heating pad on high would be best WRONG. I found the low setting was best for me! So don't think that the hotter the better!
#2.MAKE SURE your heating pad is for DRY AND MOIST HEAT. My heating pad came with a sponge that fit under the cover and you could wet for moist heat. Lost the sponge...but the wash cloth worked great! Some heating pads are just for dry heat!
#3. I took off the cover. Got to thinking by the time the cover dried,it would take a while so,if you think somebody might need the heating pad and you only have the one take the cover off so it doesn;t get wet!
Oh by the way I didn't try any of the epson salts. It was just water and heat. I'm going to try to get some salts soon. If any body trys this let me know! The sitz bath just didn't do diddle for me. And if ya try this your own your bub! Don't hold me resposibale okie?? I hope it works for somebody else! Feels good to be normal again. Ahhhh.
Dr.Stoll? Would you tell me what you think of this idea?
Anybody else get this idea too?? I can't be the only one!! Speak up!! :)

Hi, Kia.

Glad this worked for you. Personally, I would not be patient enough to do it this way. I just stand by the hot water faucet and continually remew the heat as often as the wad of washcloth cools a little. That way I only have to be inconvenienced for 5 minutes rather than the longer times.

Thanks for the protocol.

Walt

I find this is great for people who may have a bad knee like me or maybe a foot problem. And wouldnt you know my knee has started bothering me since my flair up so it's harder to stand on! Rains it pours.... OH last night I only laid on the moist heating pad for 10 minutes. Worked just as good as 20. Tonight I'm trying the 5 minutes. Dry heat didn't seem to work as good as moist....anyone have an idea as why this is??

Maybe because it absorbs. Not sure, just a thought.

I've got no clue. I did try 5 minutes though. 5 works as good as 20 minutes if my swelling isn't huge. My swelling was so bad it took 20 minutes 2 times a day for 3 days to make it go down! Yuck. I say 10 minutes of the heating pad thingy is best! :-) Oh,I'm going to go get some of that black stuff today with some luck. Do you use it BEFORE you have a flare up? Or,just after? I'm also wondering...if I have another flare up,should I go to the DR like I did this time or let it take it's course? Guess I'm asking whatr did YOU do? Was the first big flare up scarry? Mine didn;t get to the boil part. I think I'd freak out!
