Pilonidal Cyst

Hi Dr.Stoll,
First of all, I would like to thank you for this excellent source of information.
I would like to explain how I came to know I had the cyst by a doctor who told I have a pilonidal cyst and asked to have a surgery and gave some antibiotics for the time being. I want to explain as I am not sure if its the pilonidal cyst or anything else. I had a small swelling in sep '00 at the side on one of my buttocks near to the center partition. But, I never noticed any hole or something like that before the swelling and the swelling quickly healed. Then again in december, I got the swelling(at max 1.5 cm diameter) and did not go till now. I also had some bleeding of blood and pus at the swelling. So, I showed to a doctor recently and he gave some antibiotic tablets and told me to have a surgery. I would like to know, if these are the symptons of the pilonidal cyst only? If so, is there any way to avoid the surgery (because it has a 50% recurrence rate, as I learnt from the site) and use any other means. I did spend a lot of time reading the archives and gained a lot of information, but am not clear of whats the best way other than the surgery. Also, having to rest for a month after the surgery without any work scares me.
Vijay

Hi, Vijay.

What I would do in your situation is learn how to use the hot compressses, at the first sign of trouble, and use a donut when sitting to keep pressure off the area.

Using hair remover every week will also help so long as you have not had any definitive surgery.

THEN, you will have to decide if how you do is good enough for you to live with the problem OR if it is worth the throwing the dice that surgery is: cure 50% or worse 50%.

Let us know how you do.

Walt

Thanks Sally. But do you think it is pilonidal cyst. I thought the cyst only occurs somewhat above the buttocks and there is a pimple/hole from which it starts. The abcess, has become hard. I am using hot compresses which is applying hot water soaked cloth at the location. Please correctly me if I am wrong anywhere above.
Thanks again,
Vijay

Vijay.

The recurrent nature of the condition certifies the diagnosis.
