pilondal cyst flare-ups

Dr. Stoll-

Thank you so much for this website. It's great to know that I am definately not alone with all of this pain that I'm having. I first discovered this problem two years ago (I am now 23). The first doctor I saw opened it and drained it and sent me home with no instructions. The second doctor I saw did the same, but left it open and gave me instructions on how to pack it. I have been reading all of the posts on here, and I definately want to avoid surgery if possible.

I read a post somewhere that said the his cyst flared up during high stress times. Mine seems to always flare up during my "monthly visitor" and lasts about a week or so. Is this just a coincidence or could that be causing the flareups?

Also, will medicines like tylenol and ibuprophen help with the pain at all? Sometimes it gets so unbearable.

Thanks

Hi there. First off in my experience...Nothing over the counter HAS EVER WORKED. My doctor gives me Tylox or Loratab tylox being the stronger of the two. This helps a little. Only helping me to sleep. I posted a few weeks ago about the stress levels and the connection and have never heard back from anyone. I was in a bad car wreck and it came up 1 week later and also I lost my father and the same thing happened. I personally think that there is a connection. Hot towels with epsom salt in the area in 10 minute intervals 5 times or so a day have worked well with me. I also use a draw out solution that I bought at Eckerd's if the epsom salt does not work. This prevents me from having to get it lanced, which in turn for me is the worst part of the whole problem. I hope this helps. Though I am not a dr, I feel I am a pro with these things. I have had mine since 17 and I am now 24. Not very long but plenty of flare-ups. About 20 in 7 years. Lately (after the discovery of Epsom salt) I have only had 1 flare-up in the last 2 years and that was after a very long drive. Let me know if any of this helps.

Hope

Hi, michelle.

Chronic stress affects everything! Acute stress can only trigger something like this IF the person is living close to the edge of her cliff all the time.

My suggestion would be to #1 Use the donut to keep pressure off the area--expecially for hard surfaces and when traveling long distances. #2 Use the hot compresses for any sign of a flareup. and #3 So long as you have not had surgery, to use hair remover about once a week to prevent surface hairs from ingrowing.

Since pain is due to the swelling, and most swelling is due to infection, the hot compresses should prevent the pain from getting out of hand. Until then NSAIDS are your best bet.

Hope this helps.

Walt
