I know this has probably been asked before but I could not find any answers in the archive.
WHy is SR better than sleep at eliminating psychological tension etc? Isn't sleep the natural way of treating that?
TIA

Hi Martin,
From somewhere in the glossary or archives:
"SR is an activity that produces the relaxation response brought about by slower brain waves. SR automatically reverses all of the buildup of chronic stress-effect and do so at a rate 24 times as fast as normal sleep. You consciously change the activity of the brain from ordinary waking consiousness (beta) to relaxed (alpha/theta) but not asleep (delta). The subsequent relaxation allows the body-mind to heal itself."

I had so much stored tension that it took a couple of months of Skilled Relaxation twice a day before I even could sleep. That's not to say I didn't sleep at all, I just slept in 30-60 min. increments and woke in severe pain all night long every night. After I had practiced in earnest for a couple of months the pain symptoms intensified for several days until I was driven to the very brink of insanity and then they virtually vanished. I haven't regained full range of motion yet but I've been sleeping like a normal human being for a while now and I can barely believe how wonderful it feels. The results of SR are cumulative, just like stress is. Plug away even when it feels like a total waste of time, they will be the most productive wasted minutes you will ever spend in your life.

Thanks, Slowly.
Perhaps your testimonial will help others to help themselves.

I think I understood that already.
My question was more academic in nature.
I wanted to find out _why_ it's better than sleep. Why are delta brain wave patterns not as good as alpha for instance.
Just out of curiosity.

Again as I asked below. I have no doubt it works. I am trying to understand _why_ it's better than sleep.

Hi, Martin.
I do not think anyone yet knows why. However measurable parameters of stored stress-effect empirically, and consistantly, shows this effect.
Keep tuned.

A big part of Centerpointe's tapes/CDs is taking one through alpha, theta, to delta. Apparently delta is very important, but is way more effective if you are in a "waking" delta state as opposed to the normal sleeping state. Can anyone illuminate us?

chris,
This has been archived. In MY experience, being awake in delta is only possible in some advanced Zen Masters and is of little use anyhow when you are talking about health.
See "The Awakened Mind" by Maxwell Cade and Nona Coxhead--available at your lending library.
Let us know what you learn.

Hi,
You know how ideas sometimes just pop into your head. Well I was thinking about your question, and here's a theory.
When you're asleep, the body is in a rest phase and everything slows down. The body produces or generates less energy -- just enough for basic bodily functions. Not much is going on.
When you're awake, however, the body is very actively producing energy.
I think I read somewhere that the thinking mind uses an incredible amount of the body's energy, and my guess is when you're in an alpha state, the mind isn't using very much energy.
So when you're in awake doing SR and in an alpha state, you get at least double the amount of energy -- the energy being actively produced by the awake body, plus the energy NOT being used by the mind since it's in alpha. The body then has an ample amount of energy to use for healing, and definitely much more than it has during sleep.
How do you like this theory? It's just a thought ...... My parents always told me I think too much..... :o)
Best wishes,
Happygal

Hi,
Remember there was a psychic who wrote not too long ago and asked whether her psychic readings would count towards her twice daily SR practice? The reason I would say NO to this is because the energy generated from the alpha state or whatever other altered state the psychic might be in, isn't going towards healing her own body -- it is going towards doing the psychic reading, i.e. she's working, not doing self-healing at that time.
You may or may not know, besides being a massage therapist I'm also a polarity therapy practitioner, so the topic of energy is always of interest to me.

Hi, one last thought.
I had one week of training in Cranio-Sacral Therapy, the Franklin Sills Energetic Method. I learned and experienced that there were times when a client would be in an "inhalation still point" that something called "potentizing" would happen. It was the body producing energy to heal itself. I could feel it happening in my hands.
It might be possible that a person in an alpha state during SR practice goes into a still point and potentizes.
Any CST's out there know?
Best wishes,
Happygal

Interesting stuff, Happygal.
You got me!
I have specialized in the clinical effects of all this.
Thanks, Walt
