Skilled Relaxation - getting started? anybody?

Posted by Chris on December 28, 1998 at 04:48:32:

Dr Stoll,
I am a HH sufferer. trying to start the skilled relaxation.
At the moment i am arriving at work and my feet begin to curl and tighten and my whole body feels totally tense. I am like this most of the day till mid afternoon when i seem to relax a bit - maybe due to my body has had enough.

I am exercising early evening which helps. But am often drinking as i can not seem to totally relax without a few glasses of wine. The doctor has prescribed me Oxazepam to help me relax and i am only taking this when i have major problems with my stomach and sufer from bloating and anxiety.

I believe that SR is the solution but maybe i need some help to get started . Can you suggest anything. I work 9-5 and would also like to know when best to do the 2 sessions per day. Is it advisable to do one on rising?

I do the SR during my breaks at work. On the weekends I do one session after I wake up and another in the afternoon. Best not to do it within 2 hours of bedtime and I believe right before eating. Works well after you have exercised and area already somewhat relaxed. I don't kow what HH is.

I have a coupl e of friends who are already so tense they are having a hard time getting started. I think both might benefit from doing first thing in the morning so they start the day better off.

You also might benefit from an SR tape, as it will help you focus and shut out the outside world until you become more skilled. I use Total Relaxation by Kelly Howell, available off the net or at New Age Book Stores.

Good luck!

Dear Chris,

As far gone as you are, MY suggestion would be to first find someone local who does a great, deep, total-body, therapeutic massage and get at least 3 a week for 3 weeks. By that time you will be totally convinced of the absolute necessity of the SR and be able to do it much easier.

By far the best time to do the SR is upon arising. If you will read all you can find in the archives about SR, you will see how to get the most out of your practice.

Walt

I am just about ready to start too. Can't get beyond needing a machine to measure with right now - Radio Shack in Canada does not have the $60 machine Dr. Stoll mentioned and the one on the net I found was $1,000. Have yet to research archives - info is probably there. Am thinking of getting my partner to make one if we can find directions. I work 8 - 4 and leave home at 7 in the dark and can NO WAY envisage SR in the am at 6 am on arising. I find this work day tough enough at age 54; sit on a chair all day typing for 8 hours which hurts my back, neck, etc. notwithstanding hi cholesterol and lo thyroid;
HOWEVER realise I AM planning to do SR while sitting on subway in AM as journey is 50 minutes (3 changes/ can squeeze in 15 minutes before a change(is 15 minutes OK Dr. S instead of 20) and then on arrival home at 5 pm would be good except I may fall asleep and for rest of evening. And Q. would this not be the same as just before bed, when one is too tired to do it? If not why not?
- I am planning to post about reading your book Dr S., most gratefully received 3 wks ago, and the others have gone out as xmas gifts (sister is enjoying hers); my post is slow in formulating itself. Must stop this lurking and GO DO in this great new year of 99. Will start swimming exercise class next Monday at insistence of daughter (whoa when will I do the SR?) Do not really have the energy but feel if don't make the effort will never have energy ever again. Also lunch break (45 mins) or subway ride home ? usually fall asleep anyhow) - are possibilities - sorry so long - wendy

Dear Wendy,

Sounds like the subway might be ideal for you so long as you don't get disturbed by your fellow passengers. Just hold a paperback book in your hand so, if you fall asleep, it will wake you up when it slips out of your hand.

Let us know how you do.

Also, remember, successful SR produces at least 24 times as much rest as sleep (per minute). Therefore, if you set your alarm for 30 minutes earlier than you get up now, you will be more rested (by far) when you would have gotten up anyhow, than if you had just stayed asleep.

All it takes is the discipline to make yourself get up & DO it.

Walt

Walt Stoll, thank you so much for the reassuring and PRACTICAL reply, I am LOL from your holding the book suggestion. And the info on 24 times as much rest is v e r y persuasive, I am sort of comatose at 6 am, let alone 5:30 am but will see what I can do about that extra half hour. Will let you all know how I am doing. For anyone else looking for a machine - I have found good information on a page called ambassadorformankind.org/ri-bulletins/workingmeter.gif
which is AMAZING stuff and has beautiful extra information

Thanks, Wendy.

People are always asking about where they can learn about machines and I never know what to tell them. There were even several people this week that sounded like they would be able to take a diagram & build their own.

Namaste` Walt
