I was finding it very difficult to get into the alpha state when "manually" meditating because of my busy mind. I read the archives and learned about Centerpointe, so I toured the site and listened to the 18-minute demo. I've never meditated before, but I'm almost positive that I sunk right into the alpha state. It was like I was very slightly "buzzed", thoughts were less frequent and "dulled", and my hands got very warm. During the end, I was aware of my pulse. WOW!!! Does this sound like the alpha state? Naturally, I want to buy these tapes. I will have the money in 2 months. I know this probably sounds funny---but would it be okay to use the demo (since it's close to 20 minutes) for that period in order to do my SR? I have chronic digestive problems that were caused initially by stress, which lead to LGS and then Candida and parasites *sigh* You all know the story....I need to start GOOD sr right away and seemed to experience results with the demo alone. Anyway, I've already asked my question; I'll let you respond.

On the Centerpointe demo, the guy talks about how even during the demo, the brain is supposed to go from alpha--theta--delta states. But for SR, we're only supposed to stay in the alpha state---we wouldn't want to sink to delta. I'm sure that the actual tapes are more powerful in that we could sink to deeper states (delta) during our SR times. So, is this not good? Is Centerpointe a little "too" relaxed, taking us beyond the required alpha state?

Hi BB,
From my reading in the archives and other posts on this site, I think SR is supposed to include both alpha and theta. Alpha is an awake state, and theta is stage one sleep where you still have muscle control and some awareness. Anything beyond that is actual sleep. At least that's my interpretation, and I stress that I'm only a beginner :)
To respond to your question with an opinion, maybe the Centerpointe CDs wouldn't be bad (taking you into delta) if you actually spent at least 20 minutes in alpha and theta. An extra little nap probably wouldn't hurt, as long as time isn't a problem for you, and you might come out of it feeling very refreshed.
Now I have a question for you. I looked at the Centerpointe site after you posted about it, and I listened to most of the demo (without headphones, though). I noticed they make reference to 12 stages of the program, and it appeared to me that the offer on the website might be only for the first/starter stage. That would suggest to me that the first set was $140-150, and there would be a similar charge for each set after that. Is that your impression too? Of course you could just do the one unit, if all you were after was relaxation, but I wondered if I was interpreting it wrong.
The materials on their site and in the demo were very compelling, as far as the total effect, and I liked the fact that there was a money-back guarantee. I'd also be interested in hearing opinions from the board folks on how this program worked for them and whether or not it was a good value.

Nutmeg,
Great post. Thank you! As far as the cost goes, yeah---to my great dismay, I think that the $140-$150 is just for the first round. Of course, I'd love to go through all 12 rounds, but I'm doing this primarily for the SR, since I need it from nasty bracing. I'm assuming that each subsequent set would be near the same price, but I also read that buying multiple stages in advance would allow for a "substantial discount". Anyway, what you said about the alpha waves makes sense--I only NEED it for 20 minutes. And maybe someone can answer this: would the "reconfiguration" of the brain help in terms of SR? I guess it would help us cope with stress better. What I REALLY like is the fact that I can (maybe) get into alpha, that I don't have to rely on my own mind to calm down enough to get there. I'm with Nutmeg--Centerpointe folks, please fill us in! Also, what about you Brainsync people? Thanks!

I use brain sync and hemisync....downloaded both from Napster when it was still running. Someone said they aren't as effective that way because you can't get all the different waves...but they work great for me!

Hi, Blabberbrain.
Good term. The ancients call it the "monkey brain".
Listen to nutmeg and Barbara.
Your symptoms sound very promising. Statistically everyone but accomplished Zen Masters are asleep in Delta. So long as you can stay awake (serving spoon trick) any of these frequencies are fine.
Whatever works, works.
Hope this helps.

I've been using Centerpointe for about a year now. Yes, the initial program is $150 or so. More if you get the CD's which I recommend, as I used the tapes so often they kind of warped on me and the sound quality was not good. Although they did replace it for me and ultimately sent the CD's because the second one did the same thing. Anyway, they recommend that you start with "The Dive" which is 30 minutes in length for two weeks. Then you are to add "Immersion" which is an additional 30 minutes for a total of 1 hour per sitting. I don't have that kind of time to dedicate, so I opted to just use "The Dive". Unfortunately, I have only been diligent in doing my SR once per day. Usually when I wake up in the am.
I know I'm in the alpha state during the meditation, as I am totally relaxed and my body kind of goes numb. I can't feel my hands, and I feel like I just woke up from a nap when finished.
I have terrible monkey mind, so I find this program to be the most effective for me. There have been a couple of times during this last year that I have done it twice per day and can attest to feeling better during that time. However, by not sustaining the twice per day SR, the panacea did not last long. So, I know in my heart that I "have" to "make up my mind" and commit to doing this for my own well being. To that end, as of yesterday, I have begun meditating twice per day again. I'm confident that I will achieve my goals this time.
I hope this helps you, and that I didn't blabber on too long.
Namaste`

Okay--I'm not sure how to paste a link onto this post, but I'm going to try....Anyway, I've looked up Brainsync, and there's a CD that only costs $12, and here is the description:
Title: Brain Power
Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta Frequencies and Music
SYNCHRONIZE YOUR WHOLE BRAIN FOR HIGHER INTELLIGENCE Window Frequencies trigger the formation of new and deeper connections between brain cells. You are swept into a "flow state" of relaxed concentration as both right and left hemispheres of your brain move into perfect synchrony. This balancing action gently dissolves frustrating mental blocks and fears. You'll feel invigorated as fresh neural pathways are opened to effortlessly access up to 90 percent more of your untapped ability to learn, recall and create new ideas.
Running Time: 60 minutes
Soooooo....I'm wondering if until I can get some money to get the more sophisticated Centerpointe CDs, this might be a good way to go. Any experiences with this Brainsync CD? Nutmeg, this might be a good alternative for us. I'm curious to see if anyone else on this board has tried this CD.

The link sends you to Brain Massage. Scroll up a couple of CDs for Brain POWER, the one I'm referring to.

I found that Brain Power one too and I thought it looked intriguing. I listened to the sample and while that short snippet of music didn't really do anything for me, the total effect might work since it actually has the right frequencies in it, plus music. I think it's the tape that was $11.95. The CD was $14.95. I liked that you get one free if you buy three, though. That's a good deal.
I also visited the HemiSync site. They have a ton of music samples in their Metamusic section. I listened to quite a few and found one (Midsummer Night) that I could hardly tear myself away from. I kept playing the sample over and over. It was hauntingly beautiful guitar music with night sounds like crickets. They say that's one that can be used for relaxation and stress management, so I ordered it. Not a great value because the CD was $19.95 for only 29 minutes, and it doesn't have the actual frequencies in it, that I could tell, but I was really drawn to the music. HemiSync has a ton of products, but a lot of them are audio tapes, and not available in CD. It looks like they are doing some of them over, though.
The other CD I have that I really like is called Soma. Someone here recommended it a while back. It's from The Relaxation Co. There is a set of 4 called the Art & Science of Healing Music which I ordered because it was a special deal. Unfortunately the Soma one is the only one I like or listen to regularly. The others are too out there for me and I don't find them relaxing. Soma has lots of water sounds, unobtrusive vocal tones, and whale songs.
Someone at the top of the board mentioned HoloSync, so I guess we should visit there too :)
I figured it would be good to have a few different CDs to rotate. Anything to slow the brain down and give it something constructive to do while we try to relax and heal!!
