Is all stress ultimately experienced by the body as Flight or Fight response?

Posted by Sapphire [2999.8077] on September 09, 2009 at 18:25:59:

I know there are many different types of stressors: physical trauma (surgery, blunt force trauma), psychological trauma (grief due to loss of a loved one, rape, etc.), and other lesser stressors, such as infections that put stress on our bodies, or getting upset over the various little things that happen throughout the day, but do all of these stressors elicit the flight or fight (FOF) response from one degree to another?

No! When I ran anxiety support groups we always joked about it morphing. Fight-or-flight is a full on arousal just below panic. Depending on your genetic predisposition arousal can manifest in hundreds of minor ways. These are the warnings of more major problems coming if action is not taken

Once you reach threshold it can manifest in more significant problems, anxiety, panic, insomnia, IBS, CFS, MCS irritable bowel, dermatologic issues, cardiovascular, immune system, diverse psychiatric disorders and much more from alopecia to major systems failure.

Our nervous system has connection to every cell in the body and a nervous system out of balance is a harsh tyrant.

But do all these different types of stressors (* see below) cause accumulated stress, just as the the undischarged FOF does, and wreak havoc on the body? And as such, are all of these undischarged stressors alleviated by SR?

*physical trauma (surgery, blunt force trauma), psychological trauma (grief due to loss of a loved one, rape, etc.), and other lesser stressors, such as infections that put stress on our bodies, or getting upset over the various little things that happen throughout the day,

Any demand placed on the body or brain beyond baseline is stress or more correctly allostasis. The accumulation of allostasis is the allostatic load - or the sum total of the times the physiology has had to respond to a demand.

If you keep your tooth brush in the right hand drawer and I move it to the left - once you notice and have to retrieve it from the left drawer you have just experienced minor stress and allostasis. Change= stress = allostatic load

Once you reach a certain load or threshold symptoms manifest. SR does help unload the system - but it often requires a wide range of other work to prevent more loading. SR places you in the parasympathetic dominant CNS response where healing and recovery can take place.

Many people are in sympathetic dominance 24/7 and never come down even in sleep.

Sapphire,

I have to disagree with James on this point. Hans Selye, MD is acknowledged to be the greatest authority on stress the world has ever known, We are still learning from him about this even though his work is more than 50 years old. He says that the FOF response is the ONLY one we have, left over from our cave men days. We just no longer consciously recognize it as such but our body responds exactly that way no matter how large or small the stressor.

Dr. Stoll,

Are you saying the FOF response is exactly the same regardless of whether the stressor is large or small?

Some things would certainly feel so very stressful (e.g. fighting off an attacker in a life or death situation); other things feel comparatively only mildly stressful (e.g. getting stuck in a major traffic jam for 3 hours).

I was thinking the more severe the stressor, then the more the severe the FOF response would be. Am I wrong? Just wanting to be clear on what you are saying..
